International Kathy Day - August 9th
Ok... I Admit It! I Totally MADE UP "International Kathy Day!"
But, I figured that my name is worthy of an international holiday, and I chose my birthday to celebrate it. I think that we can't have enough birthdays, and we can't have enough reasons to celebrate something. So here goes!
My name - actually, it's Kathleen Mary - is not an extraordinary name. I mean, "Kathy." It's sometimes seems so...so... generic, I guess.
I can't even pretend my middle name is anything extraordinary either. Mary. Uh huh... Yup, there's an exciting combo!
Now, I'm not saying I want to be something as exciting as "Zowie Bowie" (aka son of David Bowie, who, as I understand it, now goes by his middle name?). Or "Dweezle Zappa."
But, why couldn't my parents like the name "Heather" or "Laurel" or "Brooke" or something a tad more willowy?
Really, there isn't a lot of exotic stuff you can do with the name "Kathy." No one even called me "Kit" or "Katie" (except for one of the bosses in the Antarctic who was fond of calling me "Katie.")
Well, as it turns out, I've gotten used to my name. Over the years, it has become "Kath" by people who know me well. Mostly, "Kathy." My dad calls me "Sweetie." :)
And John, my hubby, calls me "Hon."
So, I thought, "Let's take the name Kathy and announce its special nature by virtue of its imperturbability and give it a holiday!"
And so it is. By the power vested in me by virtue of my name, I hereby proclaim August 9th as "International Kathy Day."
This is dedicated to all the wonderful people named Kathy in this world! (Extra points if your middle name is Mary).
And, we'll include all versions - starting with a "C" as well!
How did I get the name "Kathleen?"
The evidence points to my Dad...
Evidently, my Dad was fond of the song, "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen," which is actually a very sad and pitiful old Irish song about a woman named Kathleen who is pining away after being taken from her home land.
When I was little, my dad used to sing it to me. Me, being newly introduced to certain musical terms, would cry and say, "Oh Daddy... don't sing that song... it's andante!" (and what I meant was to not sing it because it was too slow, and therefore sad.)
He would laugh, and the "it's andante" reply would follow our jokes until this very day. :)
Bing Crosby Singing "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen"
This is most likely the version my Dad was fond of. Either this, or from "The Quiet Man" movie (with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, 1952). But, I have to tell you - this is actually a pretty depressing song if you really listen to it.

Remember the Famous Comic Strip "Cathy?"
Who can forget our favorite "Cathy" from the comic pages? Created by another wonderful Cathy (Cathy Guisewite), our heroine lives on in book form, and is as lovable as ever.
Yes... My parents gave me a "Chatty Cathy" doll...
To this day, when I hear this "voice" I can place it instantly. "Let's play house!" or one of the other pithy little sayings of the day...
Chatty Cathy on eBay?
Sometimes I see vintage (oh, that hurts... MY toys are now "vintage?") Chatty Cathy dolls on eBay!
My First Father In Law Found Songs about "Kathy"
My first husband's dad was a radio engineer in New York City for many years, and loved music. He was forever thinking up wonderful things for us to hear and do. He once took me and Paul to WNEW FM in NY (where he worked) and introduced us to the well-known DJs of that day...
One day, he gave me a cassette tape of a bunch of songs he recorded - just for me. He was a sweet and wonderful man! Here are some of the surprises he found for me and put on that tape...

What about Duchess Kate (Duchess of Cambridge)
Who doesn't love Katherine (Kate), Prince William's lovely wife? She really is gorgeous! If she doesn't lend elegance to the name, no one does!
Songs about Kathy and its Variations
Perry Como sings "Katarina"
I also added:
"K-K-K-Katy" (not sure who wrote it - it's from 1918 I think)
One of my Absolute Favorite songs featuring my name...
"Kathy's Song" which was written by Paul Simon, and featured on Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" album, is probably one of my favorite songs. And not just 'cuz it has my name in it. I just love it...
I've also included a gorgeous version by the (sadly, late) Eva Cassidy...
Josh Ritter sings "Kathleen"
I had never heard of Josh Ritter before, but he makes the name sound pretty nice! :)
"Kathleen" starring Shirley Temple - This was, evidently, one of her first "grown up" movies
Quick interesting factoid: Shirley Temple was born 5 days before my dad. :) She was born 4/23/28, and my dad was born 4/29/28.
Anyway, I digress.
So, in my efforts to find "Kathleen" related stuff, I came across this movie from 1941 called "Kathleen" that starred Shirley Temple in the title role.
Turns out that a young 12-year old girl (named Kathleen of course) lives in a wealthy household w/ her dad (who works all the time). She has no mom, and only maids, a butler and nanny. As you can imagine, she wants a "real" family. She makes up stories about her "dream" family and tells people about this as though it's real.
Naturally, she can't have any people visit since they'll discover that she's been telling stories.
Anyway, Kathleen and her nanny don't have a great relationship; however, her dad brings in "Dr. Angela Martha Kent," a psychologist to be her governess for the summer. Kathleen loves Dr. Kent (and wants her dad to marry her) BUT...her dad is already engaged to someone else (whom Kathleen DOESN'T love). Well... I haven't yet seen the movie, but I can see where it goes.
RIP Shirley Temple...
Couldn't find the movie... - But did find a poster!
Believe it or not, this is the first time ever that I have been unable to find something on Amazon. The only thing I could find about the movie "Kathleen" was this lobby card! Well, the movie was not a box office success in its day, so there ya have it...
Hopefully others will find some great "Kathy" related stuff to add here! Please let me know you stopped by - and if your name is Kathy, Cathy, Kate, Kathleen, Katherine, Catherine, or any of the many versions of the name, Happy International Kathy Day to you! :)
