Marvel Comic's Iron Man

Origin of a Super Hero

Making his debut in Tales of Suspense #39 in March 1963, Anthony "Tony" Edward Stark is Iron Man. A playboy industrialist who is an engineering genius, Tony heads the multinational cooperation of Stark Industries. Responsible for technology and weapons designed for military use, Tony is critically injured after being captured by terrorists. During his captivity, Tony created the original Iron Man suit, using it to escape. Later, after redesigning the suit, he begins to fight crime as Iron Man.

Over the years, Iron Man has partnered with War Machine, Captain America, and Thor. He has also been a member of the Avengers, the Illuminati, S.H.I.E.L.D., the Department of Defense, and Force Works.

Iron Man (2008)

Multi-millionaire Anthony "Tony" Stark is an engineering genius who heads Stark Industries, a company started by his father. Reckless and enjoying his playboy lifestyle, Stark acts as a figurehead for his company while his father's old partner, Obadiah Stane, takes care of day-to-day operations. Tony heads to the Middle East to debut a new super weapon called Jericho to the United States Armed Forces. During the trip, Tony finds himself critically injured as well as kidnapped by the Afghan terrorist group known as the Ten Rings.

After fellow captive Dr. Yinsen saves Tony's life by installing an electromagnet in his chest to prevent shrapnel from entering his heart and killing him, Tony agrees to the demands of his captors and agrees to build them a Jericho weapon. Instead, Tony builds a miniature arc reactor and the first Iron Man suit, which results in him regaining his freedom but at the cost of Dr. Yinsen's life.

Returning to the States, Tony begins to build a new version of the Mark I suit, the Mark III. He also upgrades the reactor in his chest, making it powerful enough to power the suit's flight capabilities. During a test flight, Tony returns to the Middle East and destroys his former captors' hide out as well as saves villagers. Hunted by the Air Force, Tony manages to escape and finishes the Mark III suit.

Unbeknown to Tony, Obadiah Stane recovers the first Iron Man suit from the Ten Rings and begins to build his own version of the suit, the Iron Monger. Unable to recreate the arc reactor technology Tony uses in his suit, Stane eventually faces off against Stark in battle to control Stark Industries as well as the Iron Man technology.

The Man Inside the Suit

Anthony 'Tony' Stark

Playboy genius Tony Stark has the brains to creative ultimate technological weaponry and the looks to charm women off their feet. His attitude changes when he is captured and nearly killed by one of his own weapons in a test trial.

Kept alive by an electromagnetic chest plate that keeps the shrapnel from piercing his heart, Tony devises a way to stop his technology from falling into the wrong hands. He begins to create a powerful suit of armor, eventually using it to get revenge on his former captors as well as battle forces of evil.

The Mark III Suit

The powered exoskeleton known as the Iron Man suit went through several changes before being built with gold-titanium alloy. The suit allows Stark to fly and protects him from attacks.

Powered by a miniature arc reactor, the final version of the suit includes anti-tank missiles tsteering and retrothrust jets in the palms, a Unibeam unit in the chest that fires concentrated blasts, small anti-personnel guns in the shoulders, and flare launchers on the legs.

The suit operates with remote assistance from Stark's artificial intelligence JARVIS and includes a holographic Heads Up Display.

Iron Man 2 (2010)

After revealing he is in fact Iron Man, Tony Stark spends the next six months defending the world and keeping the peace. He also revives the Stark Expo in Flushing Meadows to continue his father Howard's legacy. Finding himself called on by Senator Stern to hand over the Iron Man technology to the government, Tony refuses and says the technology is his alone.

While racing at the Circuit de Monaco, Tony is attacked by Ivan Vanko, also known as Whiplash, using the very same arc reactor technology Tony uses to power his Iron Man suit. After the attack Vanko is released from jail by a rival defense contractor called Justin Hammer, who uses Vanko to rebuild his line of armored combat suits to secure a contract with the US Armed Forces.

Tony, meanwhile, shaken by the attack is also racing against time to find a suitable replacement for the palladium core in the arc reactor that keeps him alive. His system being poisoned, he begins to take steps to leave Stark Industries in the capable hands of his assistant, Pepper Potts, as well as takes on a new assistant, Natalie Rushman.

After a blowout during his birthday party that ends with his friend Air Force Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes "stealing" the Mark II suit, Tony is contacted by Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. He is given a trunk of papers and documents kept by his father, Howard, which lead Tony to creating a replacement for the palladium core. Healed, Tony rushes off to stop Vanko and Hammer.

The Mark VI Suit

Although very similar to the Mark III suit, the Mark VI is now powered by vibranium, the new element created by Tony with the help of his father, Howard.

The suit also features a triangular-shaped chestplate protecting the arc reactor assembly, withstands prolonged and extreme combat situations with relatively minor damage, and is shown to be extremely fast and responsive in flight, and strong and durable in hand-to-hand combat.

Two additions to the weapons system include a multi-fire adhesive grenade launcher in the upper arm and a one-time-use hand-mounted laser weapon.

War Machine

Lt. Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes takes the Mark II suit and delivers it to the military. The suit undergoes enhancement and upgrades performed by Justin Hammer, in order to outfit the suit for combat.

The suit eventually sports heavier external armor plating, non-weapons grade repulsor-based flight stabilizers, enhanced jet boots, and multiple external weapons such as dual arm-mounted 9mm sub-machine guns, a M134 7.62 mm mini gun on the right shoulder, and a left shoulder deployed bunker buster missile launcher.

Whiplash

AKA Ivan Vanko

A physicist and ex-convict, Ivan Vanko has history with the Stark family. His father, Anton, worked with Howard Stark to design the original concept for the arc reactor technology. Swearing vengeance upon Tony Stark, Vanko builds his own arc reactor based weapon of two electrified whips and heads to Monaco to attack Tony.

Arrested and held in police custody, Vanko is illegally released from prison and strikes a deal with Justin Hammer to redesign Hammer's combat suits. Of course, Vanko has his own ideas and uses Hammer's technology to try to destroy Stark again.

Black Widow

AKA Natalie Rushman

An undercover spy for S.H.I.E.L.D., Natalie Rushman replaces Pepper Potts as Tony Stark's personal assistant. Tasked with keeping an eye on Stark, she also becomes a minor rival with Pepper for Tony's affections.

Eventually, her true identity is revealed to be Black Widow, as she works against Justin Hammer's drones and help Iron Man defeat Whiplash. She also prepares a report on Stark/Iron Man as a candidate for the Avengers team.

I haven't seen the second movie, but I liked the first one. They made Tony Stark a much bigger hothead in the movie, and a much more interesting person.
