After missing everything, having to work, and compelling her husband to work two jobs, Mathilde views Madame Forestier marching down the street. Tells herself that the Necklace she returned to her was a cover cost thirty six thousand francs.

Madame Forestier has astonished and tells Mathilde that the genuine Necklace was a fake worth only five hundred francs.
