Jumbo Pumpkin Carving Kit

Updated on December 30, 2014

I am not a pumpkin carver. I tend to be a bit squeamish about the guts and the overwhelming scent of the innards have always been near painful to my sensitive nose. Also: can any of you say unnecessary mess? Am I right?

Then one day not so long ago I was meandering around a local store when I came face-to-face with a bright orange scoop and a tiny saw on the end-cap surrounded by candies and costumes. For the first time in years I was drawn to the want to carve pumpkins. Why now? Because this package also had patterns and a dotting tool to essentially trace and perforate your squash!

Not only were there faces to follow: there were shapes, creatures and entire haunted house themes!

My man and I went back to the produce department and carefully selected three pumpkins to take back home - two to butcher and one more to make a pie from (I hear if you use your carving pumpkins for pie you risk bacteria). I, of course, bought the tiniest vegetation I could find without taking any heed to the fact that I was buying a JUMBO Pumpkin Kit.

It didn't matter! As you can see by my pictures on this page the carving tools were an absolute success! I didn't end up using the patterns (though he did). The poker included in the package is great because it not only gives you something to follow but makes it easier for the rounded tip of your 'blade' to pop through the skin.

The scooper is classic, redesigned only in minor ways to make it that much easier to peel the skin and seeds away from your modern bowl.

Be sure to make something fun out of your pumpkin seeds, too! We used cinnamon, sugar and pumpkin pie spice on one set of them; for the second we used cayenne pepper, salt, garlic powder and ginger! They were delicious!

Feel free to share your pumpkin fun! Thanks for stopping by, as always :)

Carving pumpkins is one of our favorite parts of Halloween. Every year the kids come up with awesome and different ways to design their pumpkins.

Wow, the pumpkin carving looks great. You are very creative. I too hate the smell and pulling out the guts of a pumpkin feels so strange.

I have not carved a pumpkin in years. I see tools have come a long way since I last carved one.

Ahh the larger tools would be perfect! We just carved our pumpkins yesterday and we have a similar set, but in the smaller size. I actually thought to myself how I wished the handle on the scooper were longer. Then I went back inside and found a big serving spoon to use to scrape instead. So, yeah, the larger set would be perfect!!

I'm with you on the mess, the smell and the lack of desire to have anything to do with pumpkin carving. Now I'm thinking that a good set of the right tools would make a task I always dreaded fun and something to anticipate enjoying with the grandchildren. Congratulations on winning Lens of the Day. Richly deserved!

Thanks so much for this lens! I have been procrastinating in actually carving my pumpkin, because I wasn't sure if the carving knives I got where going to do the job. I actually got the same one as you! Thanks for this cute lens! Your pumpkin is adorable!

If you are like me the carving is not the hard part it is the inspiration for the design and these kits are great! We did a couple from a kit a few years back and the resulting lanterns were the best we ever did!Well done on the LOTD.

Looks like you had great success, Gina.(We used the Brass and Walnut Pro carving set and the Pumpkin Gutter - I'm not too keen on the goopy mess either).P.S. Congrats on a well-deserved LotD!

The carving tools are very essential for carving the pumpkin. Previously I have tried with the knife but it ended up in a mess (some were unable to identify it what was it). With the introduction of carving tools for the pumpkin you can bring all your minute detail into perfection. Thanks for this lens.Good work and keep it up.
