3 Ways to Keep the "Christ" in Christmas

Updated on April 24, 2016

How to spend Christmas and keep the Christmas spirit?

Christmas is one Holiday where in every single person in the world would really love to Celebrate. But in the very high-tech world and very fast turnaround with time, people seem to lose the real essence of celebrating Christmas.

I have to share my idea of what I really think it is all about. This Lens will be about ways on How to stay with Christ and feel his presence in this time of modernization. What we could do so we could keep the "Christ" in every Christmas celebration. It is not just about parties, food and gifts but most of all, to feel the true of essence of why we are celebrating it.

Christmas Season and Christmas Spirit

I believe, from what I have understood about it, Christmas came from the word "Christ" meaning the "Christ the Lord" and "mas" meaning "mass."

I was brought up by my parents to be always believing and fearful of the Lord and I do believe Christmas is one way of paying respect and celebrating His natal day. I believe this is the real essence of the Christmas, that is to celebrate the coming of the Lord.

I grew up knowing that this is the main reason of celebrating Christmas. I was not even oriented about Santa Claus or other things related to it until I have heard about it from my classmates and friends.

At that time, my father would always tell me that we celebrate Christmas because it is the birthday of our Lord. He is the one who will save us from all our sins. Although it did not made sense because I was still young, I do tell the world about it and I did tell my son also now that it all make sense to me now.

I believe that Christmas is about giving, and that is Christ giving his life for us and in return, we have to give something from our life to others.

I can say that there a lot of ways, for me, keeping its essence is the really hard part of keeping Christ in Christmas as most of us a blinded by its commercialism and too much advertisement nowadays. It is there but we have to dig deeper.

1. Attending the 9-day Novena Mass

Since prayer is the best gift we can give back to the Lord and that is also the best time we can offer him. Start celebrating Christmas right by going to the church and saying our thanks for the year that has passed by, for the blessing and for the gift of life.

Did you know that by attending the 9-day novena mass, He will give you anything you ask for. Anyway, I am not implying you to follow what I do because we are all different and we have our own faith. I am just telling my experience from the traditions that have been passed on to us. This is how we celebrate Christmas and this is how we stay connect with HIM. Well, for Catholics, they know about it. But I guess it applies to all.

2. Do Gift Giving

Especially to the Less Fortunate

Since Christmas is all about giving, give something from yourself. This is the best thing you can give. Things can be replaced and lost. Give a part of yourself, like time, a piece of advice, a shoulder to cry, a listening ear, but the best gift of all is love and forgiveness. Forgive your enemies, and see how that makes you smile.

He gave his life for us, the best we can do is to give back in return.

Giving not just with friends whom you are very close with but to someone who needs it the most. I am sure it is hard to be in their place and it takes just a little expression of care to know that they are loved. By giving a part of ourselves through these gifts on Christmas day, it is like we are sharing to them what little we have and know that with that they have felt love and care. Sharing is not just for people who can give something back in return. More blessing will come, a thousand or million fold even for those who gave without asking in return.

With giving, you will see how much it will be given back to you in return.

3. Celebrate with Loved Ones

Christmas is not just about giving and going to mass to pray for thanks but also celebrating it with the whole family. These is when Christmas is really alive. Because family is a symbol of love and love is God. That is a sure way to keep Christ in Christmas.

Well, Christmas is all about love, right? and family is love, so it all starts right there.

The Real meaning of Christmas is when Family spend time together and share thoughts and laughter. Truly, the relationship is deepened and the ties bonded. Whenever Christmas time is approaching, I always make time to have a break to spend with my family. Christmas days I spend it with my in laws and New Year's Eve, we spend it with my parents. It is not that hard to deal with because they have become close to my heart.

If however, you will be spending these days at work like those working in hospitals or the like which requires a 24-hour shifting schedules, surely, spending it with close friends and co-workers is the best option.

Christmas Day Celebrations!

Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world of the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart.

I love taking out the Nativity Scene together at Christmas. We also enjoy giving to others as a family; taking cookies to neighbors, taking a name from a giving tree, donating canned food, etc. Just giving a little of what we have to help others is more than worth it and it is also another way to keep Christ in Christmas.
