10 Top Legendary Classic Halloween Movies

Updated on October 12, 2014

Top 10 Halloween Movies For the Gentle of Heart

School is back in session, the weather is cooling down which only means one thing. Fall is just around the corner. With Fall comes Fall activities.

The first on the list will be Halloween. We enjoy Halloween around our house. I enjoy decorating for it, planning costumes with my kids, passing out trick or treat candy and watching a good Halloween movie.

I don't get much enjoyment out of being scared, there is too much in real life that does that. So when I want to be entertained with Halloween movies I don't reach for the Halloween bunny movies but I also don't care for Freddie either.

I enjoy watching the classic legendary scary movies. Remember the old classics? They were enough for me as a child and to this day I still can't watch anything much more than that. A little suspense but nothing too scary.

I have compiled a list here of some of my favorites classic movies that I like to watch during the Halloween season. I think you may recognize some of them and some you may have forgotten.

I hope you like what I have selected for you.

For Your Listening Pleasure - to set the Halloween movie ambiance while you read down this page. Enjoy!

Music to set the tone for your Halloween movie night watching...Love the theme music from Harry Potter.

What's your favorite?

Halloween Movies - for the gentle of heart

This is a list I have compiled of some of my favorite movies I enjoy watching during Halloween. Not all, I feel, are suitable for younger children.

If you have another one you would like to add to the list please feel free to but one condition, it must be for the gentle of heart.

No Freddie's, Friday the 13th or Night of the living dead allowed.

Feel free to vote on any or all listed here.

Classic Black and White

Classic Monster Fun

Scary Movie Review for the old classic movies: Dracula, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon

We like Halloween around our house and I have always enjoyed Halloween before I had children of my own. But I have never enjoyed being scared, NEVER!! Not even as an adult. I don't do scary. There is just something about the feeling that was never right about it.

But these old classic movies are comical and they never seemed to bother me as a child. Maybe knowing the difference between realistic and imaginary has something to do with understanding them to be make believe. That allows for a fun scary.

Harmless, eccentric and not the greatest acting but I find them charming enough that I will watch them time and time again around this time of the year.

Abbott and Costello

Masters of Comedy

Movie Review for Abbott and Costello:

Abbott and Costello are in a league of their own. Funny men Bud Abbott and Lou Costello was a seriously funny team like Laurel and Hardy or Martin and Lewis.

Mayhem and hysterics are plentiful in this kid and adult friendly entertainment. Grab your favorite soda, pop some popcorn and pick out your favorite Abbott and Costello classic. This is the kind of Halloween movie you can turn lights out while you watch.

If you haven't experienced Abbott and Costello then you must give it a try this year for sure.

Harry Potter

Series of 7

Movie Review for Harry Potter:

Another movie series that is in a league of their own. There is darkness in these movies but there is light as well.

Harry Potter series is a different kind of scary. I do believe there is a minimum age I would encourage. I believe it was around 4th grade when my children were introduced and allowed to begin reading the books and watching the movies. Harry Potter is certainly and all season type of story not just for Halloween but the darkness lends itself especially to the Halloween season.

Harry Potter movie series is one of my top 10 Legendary Classic Halloween Movies and makes for a great weekend movie marathon to boot.

Alfred Hitchcock

Master of Suspense

Movie Review on Alfred Hitchcock The Masterpiece Collection:

Alfred Hitchcock is another top classic and so very perfect for the Halloween season. He earned his name of 'The master of suspense'. I will admit though I was selective of which of Alfred Hitchcock's work I would watch. There were a few movies that are some of my all time favorites and some I will never watch but my early memories of Hitchcock was his TV program 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents'.

I did enjoy the recent movie in 2012 titled 'Hitchcock' of his life with Anthony Hopkins playing Hitchcock character. I found it quite interesting and intriguing being enlightened to how much his wife had to do with his productions as well.

My favorite of his movies is 'North by Northwest' I suppose Cary Grant has something to do with that. Either way Hitchcock made my top 10 list of legendary classic movies for Halloween.

Sherlock Holmes

A master detective

Review of Sherlock Holmes:

Suspense is as intense as I get with scared and I have different levels suspense that I can handle. Sherlock Holmes has always been a doable suspense on my radar and I have always found this character of Sherlock Holmes intriguing and interesting.

One of my favorite portrayals of Sherlock Holmes is from 'Star Trek the Next Generation' with Data and the extension of the story when a Holmes characters of Professor Moriarty came to life putting a new dimension on the Sherlock Holmes story for me.

Several options for watching different versions of Sherlock Holmes to choose from if you want, but even a good read serves for fun entertainment for an evening of suspense.

'Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth.'
