Lily Sesame Street Muppet
Sesame Street and Hungry Kids
Kids, moms and dads love Sesame Street! A favorite PBS show that began in 1967 introduced kids to Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, Ernie and Bert. Elmo came later and now a new muppet called Lily moves into Sesame Street.
Sesame Street is introducing a new character in a prime time television special to bring awareness to the problem of hunger in the United States and specifically children that don't have enough to eat. Titled "Growing Hope Against Hunger", Lily, a "food insecure" muppet will be introduced as a 7 year old child who often goes hungry but helps others in her community by volunteering at a local food pantry. Lily is the newest Sesame Street muppet or character that will be used to show Sesame Street fans what it means to go hungry.
The Sesame Street Network is hoping that this special will help hungry kids and adults realize that help is available and raise awareness of hunger in America.
Real clients from the Feeding America network will also be spotlighted in this special.
Growing Hope Against Hunger
Hunger in America
Airing Sunday, October 9th on PBS, Sesame Street will air the special "Growing Hope Against Hunger" to bring to light the very real problem of hunger in America.
It's hard to believe that in the United States children go to bed hungry every night. According to Feeding America.org, "In 2009, 50.2 million Americans lived in food insecure households, 33 million adults and 17.2 million children." This is not a new problem but with the current economic problem these numbers will only get worse.
How can you teach your children about hunger in the United States?
