Valentine's Day--History, Legends, & Gifts
A Celebration of True Love
Valentine’s Day February 14, the special day set aside to celebrate love. A day commonly associated with red hearts and cupid’s flying arrows meant to pierce the heart leading the one, or couple, wounded to experience eternal love. With Cupid’s love arrow penetrating their heart, they supposedly fall in love and are led on into a life-long blissful relationship. That describes the legendary, fairy-tale version of Valentine’s Day but however you choose to view this day of love, in reality or fairy tale, it can be a fun filled day to enjoy—with the one you love.
For me, I like to explore both versions. My husband claims that Valentine’s Day was the exact date he fell in love with me. It seems that Cupid made an accurate shot to his heart and the legend of Valentine’s Day fell perfectly in place. After thirty-nine Valentine’s Days later with the same man, I would have to agree that the legend is accurate and true. My husband always celebrates this special day of love in romantic, loving, and memorable ways. Therefore, I always look forward to what he comes up with each year. I share with you here a few of my favorite ways we celebrate our gift of love and marriage…

The Legend of Cupid
Cupid Shoots His Arrows of Love
According the encyclopedia Britannica, "Cupid is the Latin name for the god of love, Eros. Cupid is generally identical with Amor (Cupido, “desire”). The idea of the god of love in Roman poetry is due to the influence of Alexandrian poets and artists, in whose hands he became a mischievous boy with essentially human characteristics. His usual attribute is the bow."
In Roman mythology, Cupid was the son of the goddess of love, Venus. Being wounded by Cupid's arrows causes a person to fall in love. According to legend, Cupid was wounded by one of his own arrows, causing him to fall in love with a mortal princess named Psyche. With Cupid being immortal, this presented a problem, which the gods solved by making Psyche immortal so she could be united with Cupid forever.
The normal image of Cupid is a chubby, naked little boy with golden wings. With smiles and dimpled face, he also is never without his bow and arrow.
This is where the legendary Cupid of love came from. This mischievous boy with his human traits would shoot, piercing prospects of love with his arrows. Being shot with an arrow of Cupid was essentially the same as being under the influence of a love potion. Cupid is thought to fly around, especially during Valentine’s Day, shooting the unsuspecting with his arrows of love. They then are under his spell and fall helplessly in love with the person they are with.

A Little Valentine's Day History
In the United States, Valentine's Day became popular in the mid-1800's around the time of the Civil War. Many valentines of that period were hand painted and usually showed a fat cupid whose arrows pierced a heart. Other valentines were made with satin, ribbon, and lace trimmings. Some valentines were even made from dried flowers or seaweed! The more elaborate valentines cards of this time period could cost as much as $10. (And I thought $5 today was high!)
