MacBook Pro 15.4-Inch Laptop With Retina Display Review

Review of My Apple MacBook Pro 15.4" Laptop With Retina Display

Large Size Laptop Display

It was the large size of the Retina Display that sold me on this very special laptop. Now that I've had it for six months I can honestly say I don't know how I managed all these years without a laptop. The convenience of having a movable desk is life changing. Now I can take a few minutes, anywhere, to update my website /" target="_blank">Cogent Advocate or write another article on Squidoo, my favorite writing platform.

Back on my old desktop, I'd had it with eyestrain so I went in search of something better. Now, I already had a fantastic computer - a 6-year old Intel Mac, with a 24" display.

Yet, I couldn't continue to use it day after day due to eyestrain and the furrows it grooved upon my brow.

The Intel Mac's beautiful large screen just couldn't cut it anymore because I couldn't get my documents and graphics large enough to prevent the squinting.

Sure, it's an age thing, but wrinkles enough - I was ready to find a remedy. After my opthalmologist assured me that new lenses were not needed, it was time to head out to the Apple Store.

I Liked the MacBook Air

The salesman first showed me the new MacBook Air and I loved the thinness and light weight, so I gravitated to the largest size. We discussed the features and my need for both crisp text and sharp photos.

After half an hour spent exploring features and explaining the benefits of the new operating system - Mountain Lion Operating System 10.8.2 - I was ready to move on to a larger desktop unit again.

Brilliant Retina Display

Then I saw the Retina Display on the newest MacBook Pros, and from that time on I was certain that I'd found my new laptop.

Over the years I'd spent countless hours working on my desktop computer. I bought the Intel Mac soon after it came out, replacing a much smaller older unit, and until it became bogged down with countless applications and graphic and video files, I thought I could live with it for years to come.

The reason the Retina Display is so easy on my eyes is that it is LED-backlit, with a stunning 2880-by-1800 resolution. I saw that I could even read fine print in a small size that was nearly invisible to me on the Intel Mac.

Partitioned Hard Drove Had Slowed Me Down

Since I have need of a Windows application for some personal duties, I had partitioned my hard drive to allow for operation of a Virtual PC on my Intel Mac. Once I installed that application my computer acted as if the traffic light were always red, and I sometimes sat waiting for more time than I spent working.

Easy to Handle and Pack

Once I handled the 15.4-inch laptop I knew it was manageable for me,. I could envision loading and unloading it into a laptop backpack, even with my slightly arthritic hands. Compared with the heft of the regular MacBook Pro, the thinner Retina unit won hands-down.

Laptop Open and Ready to Use

The first thing I noticed when I opened my laptop for the first time was how very quickly it is ready for use.

Picture of My Laptop On Its Stand - On My Laptop

I bought the Apple mStand laptop stand. I use the stand on my lap when I sit in a chair, right on the desktop, on top of my portable desk (on my desktop) when I use it standing, and even on my lap when reclining on a sofa.

The Stand I Use With My Laptop

This is the stand I bought, and always use at home with my laptop.

This is the perfect laptop stand for my use.

One feature I truly value is the wide base. Because I have some finger problems I often use the latest mouse instead of the trackpad - and when I use the laptop right on my lap, I can use the mouse on the wide base. It's like having a truly portable desk. The mStand works perfectly when sitting in a chair, or reclining on the sofa..

Power Cord Connected

The power cord nearly seats itself in the port. Just bring it up and it snaps in place itself. So easy. I like this. The light on top of the connector is green when fully charged, and orange when depleted.

Flash Drive Inserted

Although I've only used a flash drive once, I anticipate using it regularly to transfer files back and forth between the Intel Mac and the Retina Laptop. This photo shows the port location for USB connections. This is where I connect my printer.

Yes, I do need to use my cable for my printer connection, because I mistakenly followed my old printer's directions to connect the cable for installation of the driver, and once you do that, you loose all chance of utilizing the printer's wifi capability. So I bought a long printer cable that is always handy at the back of my desk.

Do you consider the aesthetics of a computer when buying?

@rob-hemphill: You're so right Rob, the retina is a real treat when it comes to heading off eyestrain.

It looks to be a great laptop. I've heard that the retina display is amazing but not seen it yet. I'm not a Mac user but would love to be one day!

@LaptopLeader: That is a handy tip, isn't it, but my 24" Intel Mac is the one that caused the eyestrain. Sounds counter-intuitive, doesn't it, but although it's a large screen it's not as sharp as what I need now. Wish I could also get a new desktop computer too.

You made a good choice... :)

P.S. If you need to make your documents larger for viewing, you can perhaps hit Cmd and +. Might help...
