Make Giving a Gift Card Special

Updated on June 27, 2014

No More Boring Gift Cards!

I like the idea of choosing just the right gift for someone, but that's not always the easiest thing to do. Is it? No, you say, it isn't.

You're stuck. Your nephew/cousin/sister/grandma/friend/co-worker/brother/aunt/whoever is having a birthday or just graduated from kindergarten or just broke the world's record for lassoing beer bottles off a fence post. Now you have to get them a gift, but you have no good ideas.

What's a person to do? Easy! Give a gift card, but make it special. Put a little thought into this gift that really is a considerate gift because it lets the person choose exactly what they want.

So, when you realize that a gift card is probably the best bet, go the extra mile and make it special!

To make giving a gift card special, you are going to have put in a little effort. Not much. That's what I'm here for.

I'll give you a few examples of little ditties to add to your card to make the gift oh-so special but with a little pondering of your own, I'm sure you'll come up with something even better!

Use Poems and Other Fun Sayings

Add fun sayings or a poem to a gift card to make this small gift (the card is small, the amount can be large or small!) even more fun to enjoy in the moment.

These are a few examples off the top of my head. Feel free to use them or better yet, write your own message using the person's name and personal information.

Have fun and make this present memorable!

~ Write a Haiku (5-7-5 syllables)

Varied interests

Make you fun but a challenge.

Your options abound.

~ Write a Limerick

There once was a smart little boy

Who wanted a brand new toy

I looked high, I looked low

Did I find the right one? No!

This gift card's better than bok choy.

~ Use Alliteration

Picking perfect presents presents problems.

You pick.

Write a Message That's Simple and To the Point

You know what you want better than me

So live it up and get exactly what you want!

Happy Birthday, Agnes!

Give a Magazine Subscription - Along with the Gift Card

When a gift card alone just isn't enough, consider giving a magazine subscription, too. A monthly magazine is a gift that keeps giving all year long! And it's a perfect "long-distance" gift that you can buy online that gets shipped directly to the recipient. From you to them!

Gift Cards or Gifts? Which Is Better?

It can be argued that a gift card is just a little piece of plastic. It's impersonal. It's not thoughtful. Or is it? The recipient gets to choose what to buy so many a gift card is the perfect gift after all!

I think that in the right circumstances, say for a teenager who may have very specific likes (and dislikes), a gift card is more of a sure thing than say that lovely polka dot blouse you love!

Make the Gift Special

Whatever you decide to do, make

the person feel special.

Add a special touch: include a

one-of-a-kind poem or a trinket

to accompany the gift card.

I love giving cards and most of them are actually made by me. It's so easy to do them and so fun, and above all, the recipient will treasure it so much more than some Hallmark card bought at the store.
