Princess or Villain for Halloween?

Everyone knows who the Disney Princesses are: Belle, Cinderella, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, and Jasmine are everywhere you look. When my daughter was younger, her playroom was full of princess costumes, tiaras, and shoes that were inspired by the Disney dynasty so many of us grew up with. While each of these members of Disney royalty have earned their place in little girls' hearts everywhere, I've always been a fan of Disney villains and have shared my love of Disney's dark side with my young daughter.

My favorite Disney Villains are Lady Tremaine, Mother Gothel, Ursula the Sea Witch, and Maleficent, of course. I always imagined that Maleficent was misunderstood and with the recent release of Maleficent featuring Angelina Jolie, the Maleficent costume for kids is sure to be everywhere this Halloween. I predict this costume will be so popular that it will begin replacing princess attire all over the globe.

If you are considering a Disney villain costume for your little princess this year, make sure to check out this not-so-scary Maleficent costume. If you worry that there will be a ton of Maleficents trick-or-treating in your neighborhood, don't. There are dozens of different costumes on the market today, which makes creating a unique Maleficent costume for your daughter easy.

I'm old-school and prefer the traditional costume that I remember from Sleeping Beauty as a young girl, but there are also many modern Maleficent costumes available. Or, if you prefer, you can make one yourself by following the instructions below. Keep reading to learn more and see these costumes for yourself.

Fun Facts About Maleficent

  • The name Maleficent was adapted from the Latin word maleficentia, which means "evil-doing"
  • The original illustrator based Maleficent horns on the devil's horns.
  • Artisans that specialize in "fetish wear" helped create Maleficent's horns for the 2014 live-action movie.
  • Jolie wore prosthetic cheekbones when she portrayed the evil godmother in the live-action movie.

Maleficent Costume for Tweens

Finding Halloween costumes that are appropriate for 10-12 year-olds is important to me because my daughter is a tween, and I worry about her wearing clothes that are inappropriate for her age.

As you can see, this costume has been adapted from the original to make it easy to wear and age-appropriate for younger girls. Everything you need to complete the villainous look is included with purchase including Maleficent's dangerous-looking horns. In the front, the dress stops just below the fingertips and the back is a bit longer. The horns are a headband, which helps to ensure the headpiece will stay in place, even while dancing or running down the street trick-or-treating. The necklace is included with purchase and tops off this not-so-scary Halloween costume.

If you have seen the movie, you may be looking for a different Maleficent gown. Chances are, if your tween isn't interested in this traditional Maleficent costume, she may be looking for the evil fairy's gown that Maleficent wore to Aurora's christening in the movie, often referred to as Maleficent's christening gown. If this is true, fear not, I have included my favorite sassy, but tween-appropriate, Maleficent christening gown option below.

(If your girl is younger or smaller, click the links below and you can select the same costume in a different size.)

A sassy, yet age-appropriate version of the christening gown. (Why did the seller use a woman in this advertisement? Don't worry, the costume itself would look appropriate on a girl.)

Top it off with Maleficent Make-Up and Combat Boots

No Maleficent costume is truly complete without the make-up, hair, or horns, and nails. My daughter is planning to top off her Maleficent costume with tights, black combat boots, an evil fairy staff, and Maleficent make-up. Unfortunately, she doesn't have Angelina Jolie's cheekbones, so we will have to create the illusion with make-up. Older girls could even pair fishnet stockings with this outfit for a spooky effect.

Even if your little girl is obsessed with the Disney princesses, she will certainly love dressing up as Maleficent this Halloween, especially if she watches the movie and learns how much more there is to this complex Disney character than originally known.

Check out the YouTube video further below for helpful make-up tips to help you get those cheekbones and complete the evil fairy queen look.

Not sure about calling her my favorite, but Cruelle de Ville is pretty dastardly. I would call her meanest.

@Brite-Ideas: I added her to the list. In fact, I can't believe I left her off in the first place.
