How to Make a Mario Birthday Cake

Updated on May 24, 2016

Make an Awesome Mario Birthday Cake

My kids love the Super Mario Bros.! My son insisted on a Mario Birthday Party for his last birthday and of course, we needed a fabulous Mario Birthday Cake to go with it. I found one that really isn't that hard to make and looks very impressive. Here I share step-by-step directions complete with pictures for making this fabulous Mario Birthday Cake!

"Hey, It'sa me, Mario!"

Bake two 9 inch rounds and 4 cupcakes - Use a box mix

This cake only takes one box mix of cake. I used Yellow Cake Mix. Bake two round cakes but reserve a bit of batter to make 3 cupcakes too.

One round becomes the main head/face - Cut a moon shape from the other round for the hat and cut cupcakes to make ears and a chin

Put your first round cake on the sheet where you will serve your cake. I used one cupcake with part of the bottom cut off for the nose, and 1/2 cupcake for each ear and 1/2 cupcake for the chin. Then I cut a crescent shape from the remaining round. Place the crescent shape above the round for the hat. (Note: I decided I needed a higher hat; that is why you see a cut mark on the crescent piece.)

You need the proper cake pans

Use the 9 inch rounds for the face and the hat, and the cupcakes for the nose, chin and ears.

Mix one container vanilla icing with 1/4 container chocolate icing - Add 5-6 drops red food coloring for the skin tone.

I found the easiest way to make Mario's skin color was to mix a bit of chocolate icing into a container of white icing. Then I added about 5 or 6 drops of red food coloring to give him more of a pinkish skin tone. Ice the main round and use this icing to attach the nose, ears, and chin. Ice all of these "skin" color. (This picture was taken before I added the red coloring.)

Ice Mario's face first - Cover all of the face, ears and nose with skin tone icing

Attach the ears, chin and nose with icing. I found it was easier to ice the nose (cupcake) separately, then put it on the face. Starting to look like Mario!

Use the star tip with red icing for Mario's hat - Mark off the circle with white before you ice the entire hat

I piped stars all over the hat, but I did use the white icing and the round tip to make a circle for the "M" on Mario's hat before I finished all of the red. The hat took 3 tubes of Wilton ready-to-use decorator icing.

These tips screw right onto the icing tubes. I used the star tip for the hat and the round tip for the eyes, the outlines, the "M" and the mouth and circle. They can be re-used again and again. And they are dishwasher friendly!

Use chocolate icing for the mustache and hair and eyebrows

I piped chocolate icing for the mustache, hair and eyebrows. I piped white for the mouth.

This set has everything you need to decorate any cake or cupcakes you will make for one low price. It comes with 4 tips and disposable bags. (As you use the bags you will need to buy more.) I used the wavy flat tip to make Mario's mustache, eyebrows, and sideburns with the leftover chocolate icing. The tips are easy to use and wash. The set comes with 3 different bottles and tips. There is a brush included to wash the bottles and they are dishwasher safe.

Add eyes, the red M, and outline the details - Use black to outline the hat, eyes, circle, mouth, and chin

To make the eyes, I first piped a bit of white in a semi-circle shape, then I piped some blue inside the white, then finally black inside the blue. I outlined the hat brim and the circle on the hat with black. I added a chin mark and outlined the eyes. I used the round tip screwed onto ready-to-use Wilton decorating icing tubes to do all of the outlining. I also wrote "Happy Birthday" on the board with the black icing.
