Father's Day Meal Ideas for Dads

What Are Your Dad's Favourite Foods?

When you are planning a special meal for your Dad on Father's Day, it's pretty obvious that your first step is deciding specifically what you are going to cook. You will of course want to make something that you know your Dad is going to enjoy but it is also a good idea to maybe give him something a little bit different and that he is not going to expect. This means that rather than simply preparing what you know to be Dad's favourite meal, you may want to think a little bit more out of the box...

There are two different ways in which you can go about this:

Think Basic Food Ingredients rather than Complete Meals

Think of two or three of your Dad's favourite basic ingredients. As a simple example, if your Dad loves a burger and fries, one of the ingredients you choose would be beef. When you have two or three ingredients, perform a Google search with the names of these ingredients and the word, "Recipe," and you are likely to be amazed by the number of tasty, original meal ideas you will find from just about any search criteria.

Think of a Meal Your Dad Won't Expect

Your second option is to simply serve your Dad a meal he won't expect at the time of year. What better example of this idea than turkey? For so many people, turkey is associated only with Christmas or Thanksgiving, so serving it up to your Dad on Father's Day in June is not something he is likely to expect.

There is also the possibility that when your family normally sits down to a turkey dinner, an argument ensues as to who gets the drumsticks. Maybe poor Dad has to constantly do without to ensure family dining harmony? Turkey drumsticks can be bought individually from many supermarkets - fresh or frozen - so below is a tasty recipe you may wish to consider preparing for your Dad this Father's Day.

(Just remember that the drumstick - where frozen - must be thawed properly and completely prior to cooking.)

Does Your Dad Like a Beer with his Dinner? - Why not give him his Father's Day present with his meal?

There's a fairly good chance that your Dad may want a beer or two, either with or just after his dinner on Father's Day. What about this beer glass as an idea for his Father's Day present and one that you can present him with just as he comes to the table? This means your Dad will get active and enjoyable use from his present as he enjoys the meal you have devised and prepared (or helped to prepare) for him on the big day!

Important!

Although choosing what to make for Dad on Father's Day is a process which can and should involve kids of all ages, any preparation which involves cutting with sharp knives or cooking at high temperatures must be undertaken by an appropriate adult.

Cast your vote for for this Father's Day meal idea

Instructions

  1. Wash the potatoes and put them unpeeled in to a pot of cold, lightly salted water. Bring the water to a boil then reduce the heat to simmer for twenty-five minutes or until the potatoes are cooked and just softened. Drain them through a colander and return them to the empty pot. Cover and leave them to cool completely.
  2. When the potatoes are set aside, put your oven on to preheat to 400F/200C/Gas mark 6.
  3. Pour a little olive oil over the skin of the turkey drumstick and gently rub it in with your hands. Lay the drumstick on a roasting tray, season with a little salt to help the skin crisp up during cooking and put it in to the oven for an hour.
  4. Take the turkey leg from the oven and pierce it at its thickest part with a skewer. Make sure the juices run clear. If not, return to the oven for another ten minutes and test again. Cover the tray with foil and leave the leg to rest for half an hour. This is very important if the drumstick is to be served tender and juicy.
  5. Top, tail and scrape the carrot, slice in to discs and simmer in salted water for fifteen minutes. The frozen peas should be added to the water for the final three minutes.
  6. The potatoes should peel easily by hand. Deep fry them for five or six minutes at a fairly high temperature until they are golden. Drain on kitchen paper on a plate before serving.
  7. Drain the carrots and peas. Lay the rested drumstick on a serving plate and add the potatoes, carrots and peas in an attractive fashion.
  8. Take the plate to the table with an optional jar of cranberry and port sauce and tell Dad to enjoy his meal.
  9. Sable & Rosenfeld Port Spiked Sauce Cranberries 9.8oz
  10. (Pack of 2)
  11. Healey's Cider Farm Cranberry & Port Sauce
