History of the MImosa
Only a little... I promise
I am going to make this as brief as possible only because I want to captivate you and not bore you to death with all the details.
What I found interesting is that the Mimosa cocktail dates back to 1925 and it is said to have originated at the Paris Ritz Hotel.
Apparently, this hotel was a favorite of Ernest Hemingway and a glorious place Coco Chanel made her home for more than 30 years. I am imagining that they most likely enjoyed sipping on a Mimosa from time to time.
Just a hop skip and jump away, another drink was being made in the United Kingdom known as Buck's Fizz, which actually predates the Mimosa from the Ritz by 4 years.
The Mimosa and the Buck's Fizz are so similar and the only difference I can see is that there may be more OJ in the UK version. Now who to give the appropriate credit to? I am not sure, all I can say is the name Mimosa is the name that stuck. However, if you are in the UK, you will want to order a Buck's Fizz.

Is it a Mimosa or Buck's Fizz? - To give proper credit where credit is due...
What is your thought on the originator of this fabulous drink? I have read that a French Bartender stole the idea from a London Pub who had been making Buck's Fizz for a few years and brought it back to his place of employment, changed the recipe slightly and renamed it "Mimosa". Regardless of who is the originator of this fine cocktail, they sure are delicious!
Where do you think the Mimosa Cocktail originated?
A Simple Timeless Classic
3 oz. Brut or Extra Dry Champagne
2 oz. Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
Splash of Cointreau or Grand Marnier
Garnish with an Orange Wheel
- The Mimosa must be served right away or it will become flat. Always begin with chilled Champagne and Orange Juice, since there is no ice in this drink. Another nice touch is to chill the Champagne flutes prior to serving.
- Begin by adding the Champagne to the flute. You do no need to pull out your measuring cups to make this. Just follow my lead and you will whip these Mimosa out like a pro. Let's Figure you are using a 6 oz flute, fill the glass with champagne about 1/2 way.
- Then follow with the OJ filling the Champagne Flute to about 3/4 to the top of the glass and top or splash with the Cointreau or Grand Marnier. Topping or splash means just a little, similar to a pinch in a food recipe, be careful not to overdo it.
- Garnish with an Orange Wheel
So quick and easy to serve to your guest as they arrive. You can modify the quantity of Champagne vs OJ to individuals tastes. However technically the Classic Mimosa should contain more Champagne than Orange Juice. You can also substitute the Fresh Squeezed OJ for Store bought, but be sure to use a High Quality Orange Juice like a Tropicana (not from concentrate) or Simply Orange. This is a good cheat but not near as good as using the fresh squeezed Stuff.

A Style for Everyone
Champagne Flutes come in many shapes and sizes. It is all about personal preference and style. However, purchasing a set of 6 or 12 is an excellent way to save money rather than purchasing them individually. Also, Libbey makes wonderful glassware which is used by both of my restaurants. The durability is like no other and the price is extremely reasonable. If they can hold up in restaurants, I am sure they can hold up in your house.
Crystal Champagne Flutes
Nothing beats the sheer beauty of Crystal. How the light shines through the cuts of glass is mesmerizing not to mention how it feels in your hand and when it touches your lips.
Mimosas are about the Champagne... Be sure to choose a Decent Quality and a Brut or Extra Dry Variety.

Mimosas are just... oh so good, who could deny that. The champagne compliments the Orange juice and the Orange Juice compliments the Champagne. It's the perfect pairing to any Brunch and is a great choice for such holidays as; Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Mother's Day, Father's Day. No matter what you are celebrating, a Mimosa really is that perfect little cocktail. And last but not least you really do not have to be celebrating anything to enjoy a Bubbly Mimosa.
I am not a fan of Gossip Girl or anything, but I really did like this quote.
"Here's my advice. Have a little faith, and if that doesn't work, have a lot of mimosas." Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl)
