Monster High Birthday Party Ideas

Updated on September 10, 2014

Monster High Birthday Party

When my daughter asked me to throw her a Monster High birthday party, I didn't realize how tough it was going to be! At the time of her birthday, Monster High party supplies were few and far between. Now, if your child wants a Monster High party there are tons of options from licensed party supplies to print at home invitations & party favors. In this lens, I will give you tips & ideas on how to throw an amazingly spooky party for your little monster that will cause all of her ghoul-friends to howl in jealousy!

What is Monster High?

If you're new to the Monster High phenomenon then planning a party might look a little daunting at first. The more you know about Monster High, the easier it will be to plan an amazing party. Here's some basics for what you need to know!

Monster High was created by Mattel as an alternative to the classic Barbie doll toy. The dolls all have famous monster parents such as Frankenstein and the Werewolf. The Monster High franchise consists of weekly webisodes, books & merchandise. There have been a few waves of toy releases. The original set of dolls included Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen Wolf, Lagoona Blue & Cleo DeNile.

Monster High Birthday Invitation

I am a graphic designer, so when it came to the invitation I knew I wanted to create something myself. There are also a ton of awesome birthday invitations for sale on sites like Ebay & Etsy. The invitation I created was a replica of Clawdeen Wolf's diary. Each Monster High doll comes with their own diary, a black & white composition notebook with their favorite items on the front.

Another route you can take is a print at home invitation. These are wonderful for when you don't have a lot of money to spend but you still want an adorable invitation for your child's party. I will talk more about print at home options later in this lens.

Monster High Birthday Party Decorations

When it comes to decorations, your imagination goes a long way! I started my planning by hitting the Dollar Tree and buying plates, napkins, cups, cutlery & streamers in pink and black. After I found all of the basics, I started a massive online search for anything and everything Monster High! I started on the official Monster High Facebook page, and found some awesome poster like designs. I printed them out in poster size (you could use an online site like Zazzle) and used them as decorations at the party. My next stop was Ebay, and I found a ton a great items there! The balloons were purchased in two sets. One was a set of balloons that had black, pink & zebra print. The other was a Monster High balloon set, with two designs in pink, blue & black. I mixed the balloons together to create a really cool effect! To make the table a little bit spookier, I found a really cool set of Halloween soda bottle stickers, to transform the 2 liters to spooky drinks! Links for everything can be found at the bottom of this page.

Monster High Party Food

When it comes to food, the biggest tip I can offer is to use the internet! There are hundreds of fun Halloween & monster inspired party food ideas. We decided to go with three monster inspired party ideas, Mummy Pizzas, Spider Eggs & Graveyard pudding cups. They all came out so cute & they were a big hit with the guests! We mixed these with other non-monster party foods for a great spread that everyone loved.

Monster High Food Ideas

Here are some ideas that we used at our party for Monster High inspired party foods!

Monster High Birthday Cake

When it came to the cake, I wanted nothing but the best for my little monster! Instead of attempting to do a cake myself, I had one specially made at our local grocery store. I found a picture of a cake I love online and had them recreate it. The product was amazing, better than we had hoped for! We decided on a coffin in black & pink, with the Monster High skull in the middle. A search for Monster High birthday cakes brings up a fantastic group of really awesome cakes! We also made cupcakes, a simple funfetti cake mix with homemade buttercream frosting. I topped them with some skull cupcake rings in pink, purple & silver.

Monster High Dress Up

The funnest part of Monster High is the fashion! Have your child dress as her favorite Monster High character or give her a fun and unique tee before her birthday so she can open her presents in style! I have included some links below to some fun costume & t-shirt ideas to make your child the monster of the ball!

Monster High Party Favors

When it came to the party favors, I relied a lot of Ebay & the online store Oriental Trading. We used a turquoise treat bag, and filled it with candy. We added skull whistles & keychains purchased at Dollar Tree in the pirate section, cobweb candy bought from Oriental Trading & monster themed playdoh also from Oriental Trading. A search on Ebay for Monster High party favors will give you a ton of ideas from scratch off tickets & stickers. A lot of them can be personalized with your child's information!

Party Favor Examples

Utilize online sales of Halloween products, even if it's not Halloween season, for your child's gift bags. These items make awesome party favors for Monster High parties.

Monster High Party Tips

These tips will be useful when planning your Monster High Party.

  • Monster High's main color scheme is hot pink and turquoise blue. Use these colors when decorating for your party.
  • Use Halloween decorations you already have to turn your home into a spooky haunted house.
  • Place your child's Monster High dolls around the main table, cake, etc. Each doll comes with a doll stand for easy display.
  • Monster High dolls love high fashion, so add trendy accents like zebra print, faux fur and black lace.
  • Don't want to spend a fortune on a specialty cake? You can find great edible cake toppers on sites like eBay and Etsy. You could also use your child's dolls and accessories to decorate a premade or homemade cake.
