Movie Gifts -- BBC Dramas

Updated on September 7, 2014

Movie Gift Ideas from the BBC

The BBC dramas available on DVD make great gifts for Christmas, birthdays, or any time. There is something for everyone with the selection of BBC dramas and miniseries available.

Period pieces like the BBC dramas Downton Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs, and Any Human Heart will charm the Anglophile in your life.

I recently watched season 1 of Call the Midwife. I had read the first book by nurse Jennifer Worth of her time serving as a midwife in 1950s London. I was happy to see that the television show followed the storyline of this memoir faithfully.

BBC dramas come in mystery form as well. Some of my favorites are Midsomer Murders and the Inspector Lynley Mysteries.

Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey - Everyone's New Favorite Classic

The popular BBC drama Downton Abbey is set in Edwardian England in the fictional county of Yorkshire and centers around the lives in a wealthy household, both the residents and the servants. Season 2 proves to be just as tantalizing with World War I taking center stage in their lives.

Upstairs, Downstairs

Upstairs, Downstairs

The original Upstairs, Downstairs aired from 1971 to 1975 and provides more than 54 hours of BBC drama. The follow up miniseries made in 2010 features one cast member, Jean Marsh, from the original show.

Berkeley Square

Berkeley Square - Nannies in 1900's London

Berkeley Square is a BBC family drama set in London in the early 1900s. Matty, Hannah, and Lydia, all nannies in posh Berkeley Square, become friends in Victorian England.

I recently watched Berkeley Square and was thrilled that I did. This is a quiet but full of drama show (10 shows in all) that has a wonderful storyline about relevant happenings in 1902 London and beyond.

Any Human Heart

BBC Drama -- Any Human Heart

The Masterpiece Classic Any Human Heart is a BBC drama based on the book by William Boyd. It covers the life on one man, Logan Mountstuart from childhood to old age. It's fun to watch the character's age progression--three actors play Mr. Mountstuart as adults, including Matthew MacFadyen and Jim Broadbent.

This is a touching, wonderful told story of one life.

One Man's Life Superbly Told

The Hour

The Hour -- About a 1950s News Show

The Hour is a fascinating look at change in 1950s England seen through a fictional BBC show called The Hour.

Lark Rise to Candleford

BBC Drama -- Lark Rise to Candleford

This period BBC drama is based on Flora Thompson's books about her own life.

Set in the late 1800s, this show chronicles the charming yet tough life of the hamlet of Lark Rise and the larger town of Candleford and the residents' of both towns lives.

Inspector Lynley Mysteries

The Inspector Lynley Mysteries - Modern Stories with an Old Time Feel

Based on novelist Elizabeth George's mysteries, the Professor Lynley Mysteries is a compelling BBC drama.

Midsomer Murders

Midsomer Murders - Death Lurks in the Hamlets of Midsomer

I love watching Midsomer Murders with John Nettles as DCI (Detective Chief Inspector) Barnaby. The show is based on Caroline Graham's books and are set in fictional Midsomer, a group of rural towns in the English countryside. With 19 DVDs to choose from, you won't run out of adventure any time soon.

Inspector Lewis

ITV Drama Inspector Lewis

The BBC drama Lewis features Inspector Robert Lewis played by Kevin Whately. This series is a spin off of the Inspector Morse series.

Single Handed

Single Handed

Single Handed is a RTE Television (Dublin, Ireland) television show about a lone cop in an area of rural Western Ireland. The show is worth watching for the scenery alone, but I love the actors and story lines of this drama.

One of the best things about this show to me is how realistic it comes across. The weather is often rainy and the skies dreary. The main character is often running single handed in his family life as well as professional.

I have to admit I don't follow any of these. I did watch an episode of Downton Abbey but couldn't get interested. My daughter loves the series though.

We have most of the "Midsomer Murders" on DVD. They're beautifully shot, and the stories are very layered, with many interesting characters and locations. "Inspector Lynley" is very good too. I'm usually happy with any BBC drama.

I kept meaning to watch these, but haven't so now I need the DVD. My Christmas wish list is getting pretty long.
