Today Advent Calendars are quite common during the holidays, but it wasn't always that way.

Wikipedia says the origins for this holiday tradition started with German Lutherans who used to count down the days of December in a variety of ways, including drawing a chalk line on the door or lighting a candle for each day.

The first commercial Advent calendar was created by a German printer who made a calendar that included 24 little pictures that could be affixed to cardboard to count down the days until Christmas. Others eventually adopted the idea of commercial calendars, too.

As the tradition gradually caught on, manufacturers began to create calendars that displayed Bible verses or had compartments that could hold candy or toys. Today there are plenty of varieties of Advent Calendars available for every taste.
