My Scottish Braveheart Halloween Costume
A Great Halloween Idea - Make a Scottish Braveheart Costume
Being of Scottish ancestry, the movie "Braveheart" really touched me. My clan was directly affected during so many of the historical Scottish struggles. Unfortunately, I also have English ancestry. My ancestors may have battled on both sides of the conflicts. We can't dwell on the past but we can learn and adapt. One way to do that is to make a costume based on characters in the movie Braveheart. This is a fabulous movie with great costumes that appear like they could be authentic. That's good enough for my costume.
If you haven't seen the movie, you really should. It is a powerfully emotional story of epic struggles in the history of Britain. It also contains great performances illustrating love, suspense and humor delivered by a host of impressive characters. There is something in the movie for everyone.
If you have any Scottish background, then you should read below to get costume ideas. There needs to be an update to include a costume for Scottish lasses. We shall watch Braveheart again to get pointers before finding a suitable outfit. Who knows? Perhaps a whole new lens is needed.

Which character to emulate?
Braveheart heroes or villains? How about Hamish Campbell?
William Wallace would be an obvious choice. Young, strong, powerful. Things didn't work out too well for Wallace, however. Nor for the actor that played him, but that's a topic for another lens. No, it would be better to pick someone more representative of this lens' author. Perhaps Robert the Bruce would be a good choice. (The elder leper.) That's possibly more fitting, but likely out of reach for costume building. The difficulty in getting the supplies together to make a convincing leper seems very difficult. Perhaps next year. This year, it seems the best Braveheart character to portray would be Hamish Campbell, Wallace's childhood friend. He seems short-sighted which is perfect if I take off my glasses. That and I'm pretty good at hurling large stones. Hamish it is!
If you are an older fan of Scotland and the Braveheart movie, you may want to consider dressing like Hamish's father. He was very well portrayed in the movie. Many people will dress like William Wallace and some like Hamish but few will dress like the father. If you do dress the part, you'll have to explain to your friends who you are representing. On the plus side, you get to pretty much do what you want when you are in character. Hamish's father is credited as "Campbell" only. More research is needed to find his first name.

Scottish Kilt - On sale now!
Here is the tradional Scottish outfit.
Amazon is the place to go when you want to buy a Scottish kilt. A few characters had kilts in the movie Braveheart. They are the most notable Scottish article of clothing. Buy a Scottish kilt on Amazon for Halloween. You won't pay as much money as you would elsewhere. A true Scot doesn't wear anything under the kilt, of course. Are you Scottish or not?
The vote for Scottish independence was held in September 2014. The people decided to retain the current political arrangement rather than risk establishing a new country. In any event, expanded powers have been promised for Scots. William Wallace may have had a different view of the country, but modern times are upon the land. The English have already given many powers to the Northerners. With more being granted in the coming years, the people are achieving status that would have been fought for in other times. William Wallace would definitely be pleased with the new freedoms that are the rights of all Scots in the 21st century.
Kilts For Women
They certainly didn't have outfits like this in Braveheart, and the movie is poorer for it!
