Party Decorating, Activities, Food, Birthday Cake Ideas

In this article you will find party tips for a fun NASCAR or any racing themed party, including ideas for decorating, games and activities, favors, food, and of course, the birthday cake!

I've also added my suggestions for the party supplies you'll need, including: black & white checkered tableware, balloons, and cake toppers.

NASCAR race fans of any age will love this theme for a birthday party or just a get together while watching a race on TV. This is a great theme for child or adult.

Starting with the invitations, you could suggest to your guest that they wear their favorite driver's t-shirt, hat, or team colors. Tell guest to get ready for a fun party!

NASCAR Party Decorating Tips

Room Decorations: Posters and tin signs are a fun decorating idea for a NASCAR party! Add bunches of balloons in your team's colors around your party area. A race car pinata will make a great decoration and can be used for an activity later. Display your favorite race team toy cars or collectibles.

Table Decorations: Decorate your table with NASCAR Racing themed paper goods or black checkered plates and napkins. Mix and match with plates and napkins in the solid colors of your team if desired. Have a few toy cars around on table. Place a racing theme favor pack at each table setting.

Race Fans Love to Eat!

Serve the usual racetrack concession style food:

  • Soft pretzels
  • Nachos with cheese dip
  • Hot dogs
  • Variety of chips
  • Popcorn

If you want a heartier fare, the following ideas will make great racing theme party food:

  • Pizza
  • Chili beans
  • Hamburgers on the grill

If it's a nice day, you can have a cook-out and pretend you're at the race track.

I love the black & white checkered plates, napkins, and tablecover for a NASCAR party. It is suitable for any team, and no one can complain. :)

Activity and Game Ideas

  1. Stock Car Pinata: What's a party without a pinata? Add candy and small toys, provide a blindfold and bat, and you're ready for some fun!

  2. Movie Time: Watch a movie(s) about NASCAR at your party, or a race that's on TV. If you're having a sleepover, have a movie marathon!

  3. HOT Car! Play the NASCAR theme song or CARS song. Have players sit in a circle and pass a toy car until the music stops. The player left holding the car when the music stops is out. Keep passing until only one player is left. He is the Race Winner!

  4. Red Light! Green Light! This classic is the perfect game for a racing themed party.

A Few Favor Ideas

You can also use these for game prizes

The Birthday Cake

Make Your Own Birthday Cake

I've made many race car cakes by simply making a round track on the cake with black icing, surrounded by a field (green icing) and adding those little cars you can buy everywhere. You can usually even find a car from your favorite race team. I've also made them using cake topper kits, edible images (shown below), and shaped baking pans. Or, you can order a theme cake from your local bakery or grocery store. Be sure to order early!

Race Car Cake

The video below shows how to make a car shaped birthday cake by cutting out cake layers and used fondant icing to decorate. This one seems like it's for a more advanced cake decorator, but it gives step-by-step directions if you want to give it a try. It looks awesome!

Easier With a Race Car Shaped Cake Pan

It's so much easier to use a shaped cake pan, rather than cut your car out of cake layers. I'm not talented in that area at all, so I always use shaped pans. You can then decorate it by starring in with buttercream icing or using the rolled out fondant. The fondant makes a smooth finish that you can even add decals to.

Tip: When your cake is done, always turn it out onto the board you're going to decorate it on. You don't want to risk it falling apart if you move it.

This race car cake pan is much easier than cutting out cake layers. It includes a black plastic back fin.

Race Themed Birthday Cake

The video below shows how to make an awesome race themed cake using fondant for the decorations. You may not to use all the ideas, but the race track and the black and white checked sides can be your starting point. Then, add cars or your choice. She makes a lot of embellishments with fondant, but you could also use bought candles, etc. instead.

I'm celebrating my husband's 50th with a Nascar Party! He love's Jimmie Johnson, so we made invites with the #s 48 and 49 "torn" off the car and replaced with the #50 and advising that his favorite number is changing! We will be serving the usual race food and and a race car cake that I will be making. We will be bagging up Oreo cookes as a package of "spare tires" for guests to take home!
