International Left Handers Day August 13

Updated on June 25, 2014

Yes, I'm in my right mind - I'm left handed and proud of it

For most of my life, I've heard "how can you write like that?" as my paper is usually turned sideways while I struggle on a right handed desk to write with my left hand. It's not my fault that school (and most business) desks are set on the wrong side; they were obviously designed by people not in their right mind.

Only 10% of the population is left handed so I consider myself "special" - yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. In this article, I'll show you some of the ways that I've overcome being in the minority such as buying left handed scissors (I used to just turn regular scissors upside down and, here's a secret - that works too). But, there are good reasons why there are more accidents in the house, especially the kitchen, befalling left handed people. I'll help you fix that.

And, did you know that there is a Scholarship for left handed people?! Only one school, so far, in the US offers it but at least we now know it's out there.

Left handed scissors

One of the coolest things I've ever gotten as a present is a very nice set of left handed scissors. I always just flipped regular right handed scissors upside down and hoped for the best. Most of the time that worked fine unless i ran across a pair of dull scissors and then all bets were off.

The below are all nice left handed scissors and would be a great Christmas gift, Chanukah, or birthday gift (hint, hint)...

The word "South Paw" originated to designate a left hander player in baseball as left handed batters faced south.

A few famous left handed people

Yes, left handed people have changed the world - albeit, not always in the best way but the below sure have!

  1. Colonel Sanders - his chicken is (left hand) finger lickin' good!
  2. Oprah Winfrey is left handed. Whether you like Oprah or not, you have to agree that she's definitely made an impact on the world.
  3. Albert Einstein - now we're talkin'.
  4. Helen Keller - as though this blind/deaf woman didn't have enough obstacles to overcome, she had to be left handed in a primarily right handed world.
  5. Charlie Chaplin was a south paw.
  6. Robert Redford- Robert Redford has made a huge impact as an environmentalist in our world. Heck, he could shake imy/i world, if only I could figure out a way to meet him...">
  7. Jim Henson of the Muppet fame was left handed - and so is Kermit the frog.
  8. Mark Twain was a leftie.

Left handed computer mouse

A friend gave me a great microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard without thinking that I couldn't use the mouse (it was for the right hand only). I tried and tried to get the cursor under control, but I honestly have no idea how you right handed people do it! I had to return my very nice cordless mouse and keyboard and get a wired mouse that was fitted for the left hand - I have yet to find a decent cordless mouse to use for the left hand but the below are all nice corded computer mice.

Genetically, I shouldn't be here

I am an anomaly in my family all the way around. My Dad had flaming red hair as a child while my Mom was a brunette. Theoretically at least, 3 of 4 children should have been brunettes and one a redhead. You guessed it - I'm the redhead - well, technically, I was a redhead; as Mom would say, my red hair comes from Loreal #224 these days.....

Dad and Mom were both right handed and, since left handedness is thought to be genetic, again, theoretically, I should be right handed. Nope. I'm a south paw. And, finally, Dad had the most gorgeous blue eyes, Mom's were dark brown - genetically, three children should have been brown with one blue eyed. Again you're right - three of Mom and Dad's children had blue eyes and I got stuck with brown.

I'm an anomaly all the way around.

Left handed keyboards

I've never really been hampered by a right handed keyboard as I'm a bit ambidextrous (I can use both hands). In my career field of Data Management for Clinical Trials, I was once the Manager of the Data Entry department for a large pharmaceutical company so I had to, upon occasion, input data. I just trained myself to use the number keys on the right hand side of the keyboard. In looking back though, I'll bet my entry skills would have been elevated if I were able to use my left hand for the number keys. That's what these left handed keyboards shown below offer.

Left handed gardening tools

I will say this - being left handed in a right handed gardening world is quite difficult as the sharp edge of the tool is always on the "wrong" side for me. That's why I've got my very own set of left handed gardening tools. Not only is gardening much easier and quicker, but, these left handed tools are only good for me so no one else ever grabs them!

I'd love to hear any comments you may have, whether you're a leftie like me or if you hated/loved/revered this Squidoo article.

I've always considered being 'left-handed' was special...LOL. I Like being a bit 'different'. In my family no one was left-handed as many generations as anyone could remember, yet TWO of us out of 4 siblings are left-handed. My brother & I (the oldest and the youngest) have always been close and I think part of it is this special left-handed bond we have! :) BTW, I had to 'teach myself' to crochet because no one could figure out how to teach a left-hander!

Lefties unite! I learned to do some things right handed (sewing and cutting) but 90% is to the left. When I was in high school I had a teacher that taught 10-key skills and gave me the choice of learning left or right BUT happened to mention if I 10-key right handed and wrote with the left I had the advantage over righties. *blessed

I am right handed and my brother was left however we both ate the opposite and both my parents are right handed.

All my children are right handed but all eat left handed like myself. I have always put the eating implements in the centre of the table and everyone just grabs theirs. Strange how these things work out. Every time we all go out to eat together the first thing we all do is move the knives and forks round!
