Hurray For Popcorn

Hurray for popcorn!

Popcorn is more than just a fun snack. It is history and science!

One of the oldest forms of corn, popcorn has quite a history. In fact, some scientists have dated evidence of it existing more than 5000 years ago. Native American Indians discovered it on accident when they threw the kernels on hot campfire stones.

Eventually, Europeans discovered it during their explorations and took it back home to enjoy. The popularity spread.

Not all corn has the ability to pop. There are different types of corn such as:

  • Indian corn
  • Sweet corn
  • Field corn
  • Pod corn

However, none of those have the popping capability. There are certain kinds of maize, or corn, that expand when heated, that's where we get popping corn.

Popping corn is a special type of corn that expands from the kernel and literally puffs when it is heated. The pressure of the moisture in the kernel makes that familiar popping sound. This can be done without the use of oil, but for extra enjoyment when snacking, butter, oil, and salt are added. Unfortunately, this gives popcorn a reputation as an unhealthy snack. But without added sodium and fats, it is a healthy, low calorie, high fiber snack.

Some areas in the Midwest claim to be the Popcorn Capital of the World. Although I must say, as a popcorn connoisseur I feel my own batch is pretty spectacular!
