About Popcorn - Pop Pop Pop....Yummy!
Opposite to what probably most people think: popcorn is rather old. In a cave in New Mexico, Indians found popped corn as old as 5000 years. In old tombs in Peru they've found corn that could have been used to pop, of an even older age.
Popcorn is a corn (maize) which kernels have a hard moister sealed hull and a dense starchy filling. By heating it in the proper way, the pressure inside will build up to a point of exploding and that's the 'pop' you hear. When it's heated in an uncovered pan, it will fly all over your kitchen and that's why most popcorn in the USA is sold in special bags, which you can use in the microwave. When popping it in a baking pan, be sure to put a lit on.
Today some strains of corn have been cultivated specially as popping corns.
