Popeye and Olive Oyl Couples' Costumes

Updated on August 21, 2015

Popeye and Olive Oyl Costumes

When I was looking for costume ideas on the Internet today, I found these fun Popeye and Olive Oyl costumes, which are fantastic for a couples' idea to wear on Halloween.

And if you're familiar with Popeye, you'll know there had to be a Swee' Pea outfit as well, which is extremely cute as it's obviously made for infants, whom always look adorable in almost any type of costume.

So you could even have a family Halloween theme if you have an infant you can take out in your search for treats, with the baby dressed up as Swee' Pea while being pushed around by mom and dad dressed up as Popeye and Olive Oyl.

You could even take along a can of spinach if you're playing Popeye, as that was the secret source of strength when he had to deal with the difficult circumstances he had to face at times. Props like that always add more fun to the costume image.

For Popeye, you have have to have those big arms and pipe to go along with the sailor suit to look like the memorable character. For Olive Oyl, she will have that somewhat casual look she always wore in the cartoon.

This is very close to what Popeye and Olive Oyl would look like, including all those funny elements of their wardrobe to make them the compelling couple they are. What I like about Olive in this costume is her strange-looking shoes, which almost made you think of her as homeless, poor, or at the least not too good at putting together an outfit.

Popeye Costume with Giant Arms

Here's another couple donning the Popeye and Olive Oyl costumes. You can see how those wearing the costumes, and ultimately, those viewing them, will always get a good chuckle out of the fun theme.

The best part here are those giant forearms of Popeye he's so noted for.

How to Make Hair Look Like Olive Oyl

This is a great picture of how Olive Oyl wore her hair. It gives you an idea of what you need to do to get that hair sticking out like that. Too funny. I would bet it feels very strange, but hilarious, putting it up and wearing it like that. It seems it would be hard to take oneself serious at that time, knowing what people are seeing when they look at you..

Acting Like Popeye and Olive Oyl

Now if you want to get a little into character with your Popeye and Olive Oyl costumes, you could take some tips from the models below, who capture them very realistically.

That funny leg position of Popeye with his bulging arms sticking out is cool. Then you have that patented way he holds the pipe in his teeth as his eye narrows while doing it.

For Olive, you have the toes pointed in, her hands held as they are, and that little shrug of the shoulders in apparent shyness. You'll get some chuckles if you can work these things into the party.

Dressing in costumes as Popeye and Olive Oyl is a great idea and would be a lot of fun. One other wild idea I had would be for the guy to dress up as Swee' Pea and come with the woman dressed as Olive. A big Swee' Pea with Olive would really turn some heads and be hilarious. You would probably have to make that costume though, as it's doubtful you could ever find an adult Swee' Pea costume.
