Decorate Apothecary Bottles and Jars with Potion and Poison Labels

Creating a crafty and creepy Halloween decoration can be very easy, if you use materials at hand to label potion and poison bottles. Put the poison bottles on display or give them as spooky gifts.

Decorating potion bottles can be very eco-friendly, especially when you start with bottles and jars from around the house, like salad dressing and water bottles, spaghetti sauce, jam and peanut butter jars.

If you want to get more elaborate or authentic, start with apothecary jars and bottles to create the look of an old pharmacy (when they still sold leeches), a witches lair. Old style apothecary bottles and jars are available on Amazon and eBay.

With a creepy Halloween label and some interesting contents, you have the makings for some classic and scary Halloween decorations.

Learn how easy it is to decorate bottles and jars with Halloween labels along with sources for some free Halloween labels, potion labels and poison labels and ideas for staging and displaying your "vintage" bottle collection.

Decorate Potion Bottles and Jars for Halloween

Decorating apothecary and potion bottles can be a wonderful way to reuse old glass jars and bottles by turning them into a Halloween display.

For a more authentic look old style apothecary bottles and jars; these can be found on Amazon, eBay and even thrift stores. (If you do want to use old bottles, make sure they are not too old. Many old apothecary bottles are too valuable to be uses as crafts).

Once you have your bottles and jars, take a look at the links on this page for potion labels and poison labels. Decide on a theme to follow.

Download the labels onto parchment paper, or age the labels printed on regular paper with tea to get a more worn or aged look.

By gluing on labels to old jars and bottles, suddenly they are transformed into potions, elixirs, tonics, syrups and concoctions that will make unique Halloween decorations.

Making a Potion Bottle

Making a potion bottle is easier than you think. Start by looking for bottles and jars around the house.

That old peanut butter jar, juice bottle or green handlotion bottle will take on a new decorative purpose when a potion label is applied.

Supplies Needed

Making your own potion bottles requires only a few supplies that you may have at home.

  • Bottles and Jars
  • Labels
  • Paper
  • Glue or Adhesive
  • Contents

Download and print creepy labels and old pharmacy labels and glue them to the bottles and jars.

The very creative may be inspired to design their own unique bottle labels. Label ideas from the three bottles to the right:

  • Extra Large Acorns
  • Goblin Pancreas
  • Lizard Gall Bladder

Often times the names have little to do with the true ingredients. The goblin pancreas looks like canned apricots, while the lizard gall bladder looks like yellow hominy or soaking corn nuts.

The "The Hogworts' Potions" offers a lot of ideas for substituting different ingredients for a Hogwort ingredient.

Decorate Apothecary Bottles and Jars

Martha Stewart has created several collections of spooky and humorous bottle and jar labels for quick and easy decorating of bottles, beverages and jars.

Transform Apple juice into "Goblin Grog" and dark drinks (wine or soda) into "Blood Drops." An old bottle of marshmallow can turn into Arsenic and opaque orange-vegetable juice suddenly is a "Drink at your own risk" beverage with the right label.

Bottled juice or soda becomes Fast Acting "Cyanide" while rock candy can be turned into "Bat Fangs."

She offers vampire, witch and classic beverage label collections filled with tonics, brews and potions to turn wine bottles, jars and other beverage containers into creepy Halloween containers filled with eerie treats.

Apothecary Bottles on eBay

Make sure you get the craft apothecary bottles, since real apothecary bottles are becoming very expensive collector items.

Also watch the size of the bottles. Many old or replica pharmacy bottles are only ~ 2 inches or less in size, which doesn't work well if you want them for a large display.

Make Vintage Poison Bottles

Poison Bottles are another creepy Halloween decorating idea. The chemist and scientist in me finds them to be an intriguing and curious decorating idea. However, the mother and doctor in me finds the idea of having 'poison bottles' around children to be terrifying.

The poison bottles created the same way as potion bottles and Halloween bottles by downloading and printout out poison labels. Many of the available poison labels are actually vintage pharmacy labels. Flickr has a group for Vintage Poison Labels.

One thing for sure make any poison bottle or bottle labeled with Cyanide or Strychnine is not intended for consumption by children in particular. With kids around, poison bottles should be just decorative.

To avoid any confusion, I would not put any current poison warning labels and would not use poison bottles as a beverage or food decoration with young children and even tweens.

You don't want them to think it is o.k. to drink real poison.

Poison Label Generator

Cobwebs, the hostess at Shadow Manor has created a Poison Label Generator using scans of vintage poison labels. The generator is a fun online tool that lets you add your text to the vintage labels before printing. You can use the labels as spooky place cards, wine bottle labels or labeling apothecary jars.

Print Labels on Old Paper or Aged Paper

Parchment Paper

Print out the Labels and Age the Paper

Once the labels are selected they need to be printed out on paper. Labels can be printed out on regular paper and then aged using a tea 'bath.'

To age the labels you need to brew some strong tea using 2 to 3 tea bags.

Place the printed labels on a cookie sheet and poor the brewed tea over the labels and let the labels sit in the tea for 2 hours.

Carefully pull the labels out and allow them to dry completely (another 2 hours or so). Once the labels are dry they can be cut out and used.

FairyboyProductions give some great instructions for how to age the paper of your labels using tea.

Be sure to watch the "How to make a Halloween Potion Bottle" video clip included above if you are interested in using tea to age paper.

Make Your Own Labels

To make creating the labels even easier, print out the label designs on antique parchment paper or scrapbook paper.

Staging and Arranging Potion Bottles

Finding Unique Ways to Stage Your Potion Bottles

Once you have your poison and potion bottles decorated, you will want to display them for Halloween (and maybe even after).

There are different ways to display the decorated potion bottles depending on the theme of the bottle.

Here are a few suggestions with ways to stage your potion bottles:

  • Recreate an old apothecary or pharmacy store filled with poison bottles and concoctions.
  • Create a potion shelf as part of a Witch's lair.
  • Decorate a Wizard's den with potion bottles.
  • Turn your potions into ingredients for a Mad Scientist's or chemists laboratory..

Use unusual bottle shapes (with dispensers or holders if available) when labeling your bottles and then combine them together in a display. Add in some other apothecary items like a mortar and pestle, twine, time-worn papers and even ledgers to create an old pharmacy feel.

Put your potion bottles on spice racks or used book shelves and hang miniature skeletons nearby 'for sale.'

With different bottles and adding in a few plastic rats, some cobwebs and creepy cloths, you can create a Witch's lair filled with potions and concoctions. Create a witch potion cabinet using potions, spells, webs, herbs, and skulls.

Make your own mad scientist laboratory and fill it with labeled chemistry bottles, potions, test tubes and science equipment. You might even want to display some faux Halloween specimens.

These are so neat. In additon to people making their own, I bet there are people who would buy labels and potion and poison bottles. I think it would be a good idea to make these and sell them around Halloween.
