Prom Themes - Tropical Paradise

Time to start thinking about prom themes again. Tropical Paradise themes have been around a long time, and for good reason. They can be taken in different directions as far as décor and feel are concerned.

Before you pooh-pooh the idea, let's breakdown a tropical prom theme, look at different types of tropical décor and come up with an overall plan of action for the look and feel of your tropical paradise prom theme.

Let's get to it!

Floor Plans are a Necessity for Prom Themes - Start with a blank floor plan

Start with a sketch of the room(s) you will be using for prom. I find that graph paper (4 squares per Inch) works great so you can draw things to scale. Note and draw all doors, windows, and any immovable objects.

Breaking down the room into smaller, more manageable vignettes or areas makes it easier to plan your tropical prom décor and have it work to your advantage for transporting your guests into the theme.

Below we will break it down more closely and look at some ideas for décor in each area.

The entrance is very important. It is the first thing guests encounter and should set the tone for the theme. There are a lot of different ways you can go as the entrance for a tropical theme.

What we did was utilize a 10' x 10' white, pop up canopy. It was positioned against the wall above the double entrance doors with the doors propped open. Along the two sides of the canopy, between the font and back supporting posts, we placed containers full of silk tropical flowers and plants. At the front of the canopy (opening into the rest of the room) we used two tiki torches (with a faux flame) secured in the middle of large pots with tropical flowers and plants.

Tiki Torches for Entrance and Atmosphere Around Venue

These look great. Don't light them indoors, however. Use tissue paper in red, orange and green to create "flames". You can tuck battery operated LED lights in the tissue to give them a glow, instead. Much safer that way!

"Have-To" Areas for the Prom - Prom Themes

  1. The most obvious area you have to allow for is the tables and dance floor area. Guests need to have a home base, a table and, of course, they will be dancing the night away. In this floor plan, the dance floor is set in the middle of the room with the guest tables surrounding it. This allows the best view of the majority of the action and interaction.
  2. This particular venue had a stage that was permanently set. It is the perfect place for a band or DJ to set up his/her/their equipment. It stays out of the traffic patterns and off the dance floor allowing maximum floor space for guests, tables, dancing and décor.

For the stage area, a large, tropical mural was hung on the wall behind and pilings where set at each front corner. We ran a wood grain paper around to skirt the stage giving it the look of a dock on the ocean.

  3. There was a window in the wall for beverage service. If the kids wanted a beverage, this was where they would get it. We added a thatched roof and a grass skirt to the service counter and with a sign, proclaimed it the "Tiki Bar". Sodas, water, and virgin smoothies complete with drink umbrellas and straws were available for the guests.

Just to the north of the beverage service was a snack table. Fruits, veggies, cheeses, dips, crackers, party mix, chips and more were set out in a beautiful arrangement worthy of any cruise line buffet for the guests to snack on all night long.

Create Vignettes

By creating vignettes (or themed scene areas), you bring the theme to life for your guests.

Vignettes - Scenes to Set for a Tropical Theme - Prom Themes

When you think of tropical, what comes to mind? What sort of small scenes or vignettes can you make that will help continue the theme?

In addition to the décor we used above at the stage, food and drink areas and the entrance, we had enough room to create 3 more vignettes plus a photo op area.

  1. Photo Op Area - This consisted of a backdrop mural with a tropical sunset. In front of that, we used sand colored fabric for the beach, added some tiki torches, palm trees and a straw hut. We scattered tropical silk flowers and greenery where needed.
  2. Beach Scene 1 - Here, we layered some astro turf (grass) carpet on the bottom with sand colored fabric for the beach and then laid water-look fabric on top of that -- letting each layer show. We used 2 sets of 3 palm trees and hung a netted hammock between, and added a beach bag, coconuts and seashells for effect. Since it was a corner area, we covered the wall with a sky blue paper and added a sun.
  3. Beach Scene 2 - For this area in an opposite corner from the first, we used the astro turf, sand fabric and water look fabric to create the beach landscape, too. A photo mural of the beach was hung on the wall and we added props like an anchor, an open treasure chest and a palm tree. We also placed a cruise ship cut out on the mural.
  4. Waterfall Area - We got a waterfall kit and placed it in a third corner of the room. We accented this area with astro turf, faux rocks, palm trees, butterflies, tropical foliage and birds. It had sort of a tropical jungle feel. Really nice!
