An Electric Fireplace for Winter Decor?

Updated on October 10, 2013

Heating Should Not Be Ugly or Scary!

Growing up, we had a real fireplace. I loved the smell, look and the heat that it put out. However, there are many disadvantages of a real fireplace.

I was first exposed to an electric fireplace in one of my timeshare properties. While the old electric fireplaces were ugly and klunky (a word used by Wally Cleaver), they have come a long way baby!

Today, the electric fireplace can not only heat your home, but also compliment your Winter or cold weather decor.

This website provides several examples and also explains the advantages of owning one.

Happy Heating!

The Advantages of Owning an Electric Fireplace

  • Fire HazardAn electric fireplace is not fire-hazard free, however, it doesn't spark like a real fire.

  • Soot FreeNo need to call Dick Van Dyke or Mary Poppins to clean your chimney, which could also cause fires.

  • Smokeless I love a fireplace for the smell also, however, the smoke isn't necessary for the ambiance and you can talk yourself into believing that it is real.

  • FirewoodFirewood in the house usually is difficult and if you store it outside, you need to retrieve it. With an electric fireplace, you can just plug it in!

  • Decor You can pick something you like that goes with your decor while with a fireplace, unless you remodel it, it is difficult to change the look.

  • Expense Although you are using electric and your bill may be slightly higher, you don't have to buy wood, drive to get it or hire anyone to clean up the chimney.

"When I retire I'm going to spend my evenings by the fireplace going through those boxes. There are things in there that ought to be burned."

Of all of the fireplaces on this site, this is my favorite. It has a sleek and modern look and is very clean and undecorated. The remote gives you easy access to heat if you need it. Although it is more expensive, it is my choice!

The Dimplex Electric Fireplace

If you read about this model, it gets rave reviews. It is slightly higher than a Duraflame and has a sleeker design. It has a little more modern look than a Duraflame and it is a toss up to me on which one I prefer as they are both very similar.

If you want the real look of a genuine fireplace, this is the way to go. This is the Cadillac of this style and you definitely pay for it. However, it will beautify your home and guests will be looking for your Chimney. Be sure to tell Santa you don't have one!

The Duraflame Electric Log Fireplace

This fireplace is very realistic and gives the impression of logs on the floor. I like the style of this one but it may be a little risky if you have little ones around.

This one is the "hottest" selling electric fireplace by Duraflame, no innuendo intended. I know someone who has this particular model and you don't need a lot of room for it. The photo is below. The flames are very realistic and it has a remote. All very nice for the price!
