Rumpelstiltskin Once Upon a Time Costume

Updated on September 25, 2015

How to Dress Like Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon a Time

If you're a serious OUAT fan wanting to put together a Rumpelstiltskin Once Upon a Time costume for Halloween or cosplay, then this page has everything you need to help inspire and create your design!

Find clothing ideas, makeup suggestions, and even some information from the man himself, Robert Carlyle. This may seem like an intricate and daunting costume to recreate, but you can choose to make a more basic version, or set yourself the challenge of making an amazing replica... as you will see in some of the fan links, it IS possible to achieve with a little bit of costuming magic!

So read on, dearies, to find out how to become the Dark One himself. Just remember, all magic comes with a price...

Who doesn't love Rumple on OUAT? And what a costume! There is so much going on in this outfit that it is probably one of the hardest to recreate detail for detail, but it is possible. For inspiration, check out this amazing Rumplestiltskin costume made by one OUAT fan for her partner to wear!

The main theme with Rumple's costume is the crocodile and snakeskin effect. He wears an under-jacket, consisting of a patterned doublet embellished with snakeskin, over a burgundy shirt, with a long dark crocodile-skin coat/jacket over the top. He wears dark leather pants or alternatively dark burgundy ones in many of the promotional shots from the show. His fantastic boots are long lace-up leather boots, and the shoe part of the boots are needle point toe or winkle-picker style, with a wide strap across the top (possible disguising any laces), in a snakeskin design.

All magic comes with a price, dearie!

Putting Together a Rumpelstiltskin Once Upon a Time Costume

Here are some starting points for putting together your Rumple costume. You may need to hunt around in second hand, thrift and vintage stores to find some of the more unusual elements.

Or use a little initiative, like the creator of the Rumple costume I mentioned above. She got in touch with the award-winning OUAT costume designer, Eduardo Castro, via his Facebook page, and he pointed her in the direction of the actual custom made snakeskin shoes that make up part of Rumple's distinctive boots!

  • Feet: tall, black leather boots. If you can find some with laces, that's even better.
  • Legs: black or brown leather or snakeskin pants are best, but you can be flexible with these, as his pants are not the most important part of his outfit. Just make sure they are dark and that you can tuck them into the boots.
  • Torso: Black, brown or red loose, long-sleeved blouse under a leather jacket or vest. If you can, get a jacket and a vest and wear them both, doublet-style.
  • Hair: Get shoulder length, crinkly hair using either a wig or some curlers and hairspray. Add a little gray and gold hairspray to it.
  • Makeup: It's all about the gold face! Cover your face with gold face paint. I've linked to a tutorial below.
  • Accessories: Bring a scroll and a big feather pen and see if you can get people to sign deals with you.

Rumpelstiltskin Costume Inspirations

From initial conceptual designs by the hugely talented show costume designer, Eduardo Castro, to cosplay and other handmade costumes by fans of the show, the following links have lots of inspirational ideas, resources and images to help you make your own Rumple outfit.

Robert Carlyle on Becoming Rumple

The actor behind the evil but loveable imp is, of course, Robert Carlyle. Here he talks about what it is like to get into the Rumple costume and character.

"The makeup is so severe that it takes two hours to get on. The costume, the boots with the lace-ups, it takes 20 minutes for those. Then the nails go on, and the contact lenses. The whole effect is like a mask."

— Robert Carlyle

Rumpelstiltskin Make-Up

Of course, you're not truly the Dark One himself unless you get serious about the makeup, too! Gold is key when it comes to getting the Rumple look right. His Storybrooke counterpart is not called Mr Gold simply for his wealthy bank account! After gaining the dagger of the Dark One and becoming the creature we know and love, Rumple's skin turns gold along with his nails and even his eyes.

How to do it: Use a metallic gold face paint to recreate the look on your face and hands. You could even add some sand to the mix to get the gritty skin look. Wear gold coloured novelty contact lenses to recreate his eyes, and use layers of gold nail polish to get Rumple's nails, perhaps even using false nails and painting the polish on those.
