The Most Spooky, Scary, and Fun Halloween Games

Updated on October 28, 2011

Scary Halloween Games

Halloween is mostly known for Treak or Treating and scary costumes because that's what everyone usually does. However, It is nearly impossible for your party to be really awesome without some cool halloween games. Picking the right games for your party can not only entertain the guests, but also make your Halloween party into a memorable occasion for everyone involved. This is the list of the most spooky, scary, and fun halloween games for your halloween party that would keep guests of all ages entertained.

"Name that Spooky Tune" - A Halloween Song Guessing Game

One person acts like a host and plays different tunes from various horror movies and spooky TV shows. The tune is played until someone guesses the song corretly. The person/team who recognizes the most songs, wins the game. All you need for this game is a CD/MP3 player, some scary tunes and something to keep score with i.e. pen and a pad.

Here are some CDs you can use for the "Name that Spooky Tune" game or simply as a soundtrack for your Holloween party.

Halloween Portraits - Strike a Scary Pose

For this game divide into teams with 4 people in each team. Each team gets a bag that has random props in it. Each team then, in turns, has to construct a frozen spooky scene using all of their props i.e murder in progress, getting attacked by aliens or ghosts, etc... and have the picture of this scene taken by the "host". The other teams are allowed to look at this picture before their turn. You can either have a special panel of judges that selects the winner, or just have this "contest" judged by the host. If done correctly this can be a very fun game!

Here are some fun ideas for your prop bag.

"Halloween Survivor"

Spooky Halloween Olympics

This game consists of multiple rounds during each round the contestants play different games or perform various halloween themed challenges. Before playing the game you should decide on things such as how many rounds you're going to have, how many people will automatically advance (safe from elimination) after each round, and how many people are going to be eliminated after each round . (All based on how many people you have). You should have a wide variety of games and challenges, this way the same person won't win every single round. (ex. have some athletic/scavenger hunt type games, some word guessing games, creative games, etc...) To choose who gets eliminated, put a bunch of cards equalling the number of people up for elimination into a hat. Write the word "safe" on almost all cards except 1 or 2 or 3, etc.. (depending on the amount of people you want eliminated that round). Those people who pick the "safe" card are saved, those who get the "eliminated" card are eliminated. This happens every round, but the amount of people eliminated each round can change; for examample you would probably want more people eliminated in each of the 1st couple of rounds then in each of the last ones.

A really cool idea for your Halloween Party is, instead of playing random games, just make them all into a single "Halloween Survivor" game and at the end of the party have the final challenge, at the end of which the winner gets some sort of a trophy. You can even make this into an annual competition in which last year's champ has to defend his title and if that person looses they pass on their trophy to the new winner (kind of like what they do in professional sports), or something of that nature. Maybe even write the name of every champion on the trophy i.e. the Stanley Cup, if you wanna be real fancy!

"Noises in the Night"

This is more of a game for the kids, but anyone can play it. The nice thing about this game is that you don't need much to play it, just a huge box (about the size of a stove) and a bunch of people. Have someone get in the box ("the haunted house"). The others have to take turns howling and the person inside has to guess who that person is. If the guess is correct, the person inside the "haunted house" is released and is replaced there by the person whose name was correctly guessed.

Write Scary Stories

A Fun Way of Writing and Telling Spooky Halloween Stories

Give each person a note card, and have each person write a single line of a scary story on their note card ( if you feel that there's not enough people to make a good enough story give 2 or 3 cards to each person). Put all note cards into a bag or a hat and mix them up. Then have each person take one notecard out at a time and read what's on it. This can be a very fun game because the scary stories that you end up with usually make very little sense, making them very funny!

"Killer Instinct"

Halloween Version of Hide and Seek

This game is basically played like hide and seek, only instead of "it" you have the "killer" and those who get found are "killed" and sent to the "morgue" (a designated room). The person who gets found last is the winner. The place where the game is played should be as dark as possible. It is also nice to have to have complimentary scary halloween music in the background.
