Should You Send Him Flowers for Valentine's Day?

Updated on February 5, 2013

Valentines Gifts for Him: Sending Him Flowers for Valentine's Day

The little bear pictured here is a long-lasting token of my one and only time sending my hubby flowers. The occasion was Valentines, and the reason I decided to go this route was simple. He had an office job, and I thought it would be fun! Back in my classroom teaching days, he surprised me with Valentine's Day flowers while he was out of town. I really relished the idea of being able to do the same.

He loved the flowers and the cute bear that accompanied--the bear hangs on our wall today as a fond reminder! He was a little puzzled at the balloons that accompanied. They said, "Happy Birthday". Yep! Needless to say, I did a little calling the next day. The company that did the delivering explained that they ran out of Valentine's balloons for their bouquets and made a substitution. I asked if they found it a little strange to use a birthday balloon when it wasn't his birthday. They offered to redeliver on a not-so-busy day. I declined.

My order was made through a rather reputable online florist, and it didn't take much to convince them of the inappropriate substitution. They refunded my money. Nice! My husband had a great sense of humor over the deal, and I was pleased with the company's handling in the end. The little bear stays to remind us of the fun that flowers can be.

Read on for some helpful hints on ordering flowers for your guy!

Make Sure That He Can Receive Valentine's Day Flowers at Work

If Valentine's Day is a work day, then it's important that you make sure that it's viable to send flowers to work. Office jobs are pretty conducive to floral deliveries. Construction jobs? Not so much. I wouldn't have dared send a bouquet out to the parking garage project a decade ago.

Ask yourself a few questions:

Is this going to embarrass or delight? His personality might be a factor in publicly receiving a bouquet. Is his boss good-natured? Don't rock the boat! Can you be sure that a delivery will arrive during his work hours? Expedited services can be pricey. If his hours are limited, you might want to deliver them to him at home or change gift ideas. Valentine's Day deliveries can be especially unpredictable.

You can often add a stuffed animal to a bouquet. You can also find your own stuffed animals with hearts if you'd rather deliver your own bouquet! In this case, the huge bear could hold a bouquet...great for leaving at his doorstep or in the front seat of his car!

I think the bear is perfect. It's not an annual thing, so it's fun. However, if your guy is a coffee drinker, you might look for a bouquet in a mug. Balloons are fun and attract a bit of attention. If he's fun-loving, go for it. If he's shy, maybe not. My husband is a jokester, so I knew balloons would be enjoyed. While I wasn't happy with the birthday balloons, it was funny when he teased his coworkers about forgetting his birthday!

If you do encounter issues, be prepared to explain them thoroughly. I haven't had many difficulties with online orders. If your complaints are legitimate, reputable companies will generally make amends.

For many years, I sent him flowers (red ones for the years past, and a light one for the year to come) on our anniversary, even though he worked in a secure building: it's amazing how much people enjoy helping a person with such a mission! He was always the talk of the office on those days.

My husband would probably prefer me showing up with flowers in my hair on Valentine's Day. Good idea, but it has been my experience that flowers are a waste of money on a man.
