Silent Night, Holy Night

Updated on October 28, 2015

Silent Night is one of the most beloved Christmas Carols of all

The top 100 Christmas Song list is full of wonderful music. However, when you ask someone what their favorite Christmas Carol is, many people choose Silent Night. Why does this one piece of music continue to grab the hearts of generation after generation?

The music is simple, the words are powerful and it is about the birth of Our Lord. Since that's what Christmas is about, Silent Night will continue to rank as one of the most favorite Christmas Carols of all.

Silent Night Lyrics

Silent night, holy night

All is calm, all is bright

Round yon Virgin Mother and Child

Holy Infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace

Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!

Shepherds quake at the sight

Glories stream from heaven afar

Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!

Christ, the Savior is born

Christ, the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night

Son of God, love's pure light

Radiant beams from Thy holy face

With the dawn of redeeming grace

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Do your kids know the words to Silent Night? Do they know what the words mean?

Children love to sing, especially at Christmas. When they hear a favorite carol, they start singing with gusto. However, many stumble over the words and have no real understanding of the phrases in the songs. The words and sentence structures are not contemporary so children have trouble trying to interpret them. Breaking the song down phrase-by phrase and teaching the children what the words mean makes it more enjoyable.

At Christmas, a very long time ago in Sunday School, a boy drew a picture of the manger and a round ball in the background. When our teacher asked him what it was, he said it was a round yon virgin. At least he knew what round was. I think we were six.

Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will towards men

1961 Dennis the Menace Christmas Show

At the end of the show, Dennis asks his parents if they forgot something and then he sings Silent Night. It is very sweet and touching.

The history of Silent Night

Silent Night had very humble beginnings and yet, has become one of the most beloved Christmas Carols of all.

History of Silent Night

SILENT NIGHT: The Song Heard 'Round The World
by Bill Egan, Christmas Historian

Mr Egan has compiled a history of the song Silent Night. You can read it at your leisure but the first paragraph is quoted here.

"180 years ago the carol "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht" was heard for the first time in a village church in Oberndorf, Austria. The congregation at that Midnight Mass in St. Nicholas Church listened as the voices of the assistant pastor, Fr. Joseph Mohr, and the choir director, Franz Xaver Gruber, rang through the church to the accompaniment of Fr. Mohr's guitar. On each of the six verses, the choir repeated the last two lines in four-part harmony"

These simple words and simple tune transformed this song into one that is sung around the world still today,
