Songs About Vampires: Top Ten Best Vampire Songs of All Time

Updated on August 27, 2013

The greatest vampire songs

Here it is, the top ten best vampire songs of all time. Songs about vampires are a great way to set the mood for Halloween, a vampire themed costume party, for authors writing about vampires and anyone who is just in the mood to listen to vampire songs.

Creating this list was a challenge because there are so many great songs about vampires, but I've narrowed it down to what I think are the absolute best vampire songs.

Let me know what you think in the Guestbook. If you don't see your absolute favourite vampire song here, feel free to add it to the list of other great vampire songs.

Enjoy the music!

Note: The MP3 files sometimes take some time to load and may not load properly on a mobile device.

#10 Lost Boys

"We are dead until dark..."

- The 69 Eyes

The 10th Best Vampire Song of All Time - Video: 'Lost Boys' by The 69 Eyes

The 69 Eyes are a goth rock band from Helsinki, Finland. This song about vampires, from their 2004 album Devil, pays tribute to the 1987 classic The Lost Boys starring Kiefer Sutherland and the Coreys (Haim and Feldman). The 69 Eyes specifically asked Jackass and Viva la Bam star Bam Margera to direct the music video because The Lost Boys is one of his all time favourite movies.

#9 Nosferatu

"Only a woman can break his spell, pure in heart, who will offer herself to Nosferatu..."

- Blue Oyster Cult

Songs about Vampires #9 - Video: 'Nosferatu' by Blue Oyster Cult

Blue Oyster Cult (BOC) is an American band from Lond Island, New York. The vampire song Nosferatu was the last song on their 1977 album Spectres and is based upon the earliest known vampire movie, the 1922 German Expressionist film Nosferatu, derived from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. The rights to Dracula were never obtained from Stoker's widow so names were changed and the plot slightly altered.

Although the lyrics from The Blue Oyster Cult song Nosferatu closely follow the plot of the film Nosferatu they also make direct reference to Bram Stoker's Dracula by using the character name 'Lucy' instead of 'Annie', as she had been renamed for Nosferatu.

This music video shows scenes from the movie Nosferatu.

#8 Vampire Heart

"You can't escape the wrath of my heart, beating to your funeral song..."

Best Vampire Songs of All Time #8 - Video: 'Vampire Heart' by HIM

HIM, a rock band from Helsinki, Finland. Vampire Heart was the third single from their fifth album Dark Light.

This is a dark vampire love song from the perspective of the vampire, possibly a tale of unrequited love. The vampire just wants his conquest to love him, as determined from the lyrics 'Hold onto me like you held onto life' and 'love me like you love the sun'.

This video is fan made using footage from the anime film Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust.

#7 Closer

"She took my heart, I think she took my soul, with the moon I run, far from the carnage of the fiery sun..."

- Kings of Leon

#7 - Songs About Vampires - Video: 'Closer' by Kings of Leon

The Kings of Leon, an American rock band from Nashville, Tennessee, released their fourth album, Only by the Night in 2008. Closer, the first track on the album, can be interpreted many ways.

The first is that Closer is a song about a 2000 year-old vampire going through the motions of eternal existence, chasing conquest after conquest, and perhaps this afterlife is taking its toll.

The second meaning involves using vampires as a metaphor for drug use. In this case the 'she' isn't a woman but rather a drug and the habit is making the user feel like old like a 2000 year-old vampire.

The third possibility is that this song is based on the Anne Rice novel Blood and Gold about vampire Marius who chases after his vampire lover Pandora.

There is an official video for Closer but I don't think it does anything for the song. I've chosen a fan made video instead that uses footage from the 2003 vampire movie Underworld.

#6 Her Black Wings

"Her stride is such, mortals freeze, when she walks past..."

- Danzig

The 6th Best Vampire Song of All Time - Video: 'Her Black Wings' by Danzig

Her Black Wings is off of Lucifuge, the second album by Glenn Danzig, formerly of Misfits. The whole album is really amazing and worth listening to. Her Black Wings could be about a vampire, a demoness or a femme fatale. Personally, it makes me think of a dark and dangerous vampire temptress which is why I consider it a great song about vampires.

Lucifuge by Danzig

Danzig 2: Lucifuge
Danzig 2: Lucifuge

Although not available in MP3 format (or from itunes) this is such a great album that you'll want to buy it in CD format. The best way to describe this album is to call it 'bluesy Satan music'. Every track is brilliant. My favourite songs include Her Black Wings, Tired of Being Alive, Devil's Plaything and Blood and Tears.

#5 If I was Your Vampire

"Beyond the pale everything's black, no turning back..."

- Marilyn Manson

#5 - Songs About Vampires - Video: 'If I Was Your Vampire' by Marilyn Manson

If I Was Your Vampire is off American shock-rocker Marilyn Manson's 2007 album Eat Me, Drink Me. The entire album is full of vampire imagery and influenced by his divorce from Dita von Teese, his relationship with Evan Rachel Wood and the novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Manson is famous for many things including his dark views of love including the concepts of dying for, devouring and being devoured by love.

This video is set to a series of vampire images and art.

#4 Make Me Wanna Die

"And everything you love will burn up in the light..."

- The Pretty Reckless

4th Best Vampire Song of All Time - Video: 'Make Me Wanna Die' by The Pretty Reckless

Taylor Momsen first came onto the scene as Jenny Humphrey from the tv series Gossip Girl but her true passion has always been music. She's the lead singer of the grunge-pop-rock band The Pretty Reckless and Make Me Wanna Die was the first single off their 2010 debut album Light Me Up.

Make Me Wanna Die was selected as the theme music for the second season trailer of the tv series The Vampire Diaries, based on the book series of the same name by author L.J. Smith, and achieved the number one spot on the UK Rock chart in 2010.

This song could be about a young woman ready to give up her life to spend eternity with her vampire lover, or it could be about the corruption of an innocent girl forced to face her own actions in the cold light of day. Whether the vampire imagery within the lyrics is literal or metaphorical, this is one of the best vampire songs of all time.

This video is the viral version released prior to the official video featuring backstage and live footage. I actually prefer this version.

#3 Bloodletting

"There's a crack in the mirror and a bloodstain on the bed..."

- Concrete Blonde

#3 - Songs About Vampires - Video: 'Bloodletting' by Concrete Blonde

Concrete Blonde are an alternative rock band that have been together on and off since 1982. Their most successful album, 1990s Bloodletting, features the vampire song of the same name that was inspired by Anne Rice's vampire novels and Sting's song Moon Over Bourbon Street. I just love the bassline and singer/bassist Johnette Napolitano's throaty vocals.

#2 Dragula

"Dead I am the one, exterminating son, slipping through the trees, strangling the breeze..."

- Rob Zombie

The Second Best Song About Vampires - Video: 'Dragula' by Rob Zombie

Rob Zombie, formerly the lead singer of the heavy metal band White Zombie, released his debut solo album Hellbilly Deluxe in 1998. Dragula was the first single and is about the drag racing coffin car DRAG-U-LA featured on the tv series The Munsters.

There are also references to Count Dracula throughout the song. For example, "Dead I am the rat, feast upon the cat" refers to Count Dracula's shapeshifting abilities. In the Bram Stoker novel Dracula the Count turns into a wolf, bat and a rat.

This is the official video which actually features Rob Zombie in the Munster Koach instead of DRAG-U-LA.

#1 Bela Lugosi's Dead

"The bats have left the bell tower, the victims have been bled..."

- Bauhaus

The Best Vampire Song of All Time - Video: 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' by Bauhaus

You knew this would be number one, didn't you?

Bauhaus are considered to be the pioneers of goth rock. Bela Lugosi's Dead dropped in 1979 and was their first single. The original run consisted of 5000 copies on 12" white vinyl. The single has been re-released numerous times since then and featured in countless films.

Born Bela Ferenc Dezso Blasko, Bela Lugosi was a Hungarian actor most famous for his portrayal of Count Dracula on Broadway and in the subsequent 1931 movie Dracula, both based on Bram Stoker's novel of the same name. On August 16, 1956, at the age of 73, Bela Lugosi died of heart failure. He was buried wearing his Count Dracula cape.

I've included two videos here: Bauhaus performing live in London in 1982 and a cover by Nouvelle Vague. Which version do you prefer? Vote in the poll below.

Honourable Mention

Honourable Mention Goes To: - Video: 'Bad Things' by Jace Everett

This song can't officially make a list of the best vampire songs because it was written in 2005 and was not intended to be about vampires. But, ever since it was chosen to be the theme song of the 2008 tv series True Blood it has become synonymous with vampires. It's a really great tune and I dare you to listen to it and not think of Bill Compton purring 'Sook-eh' in a Southern drawl.

Dragula is the only song I'm familiar with from the list. Scream by Avenged Sevenfold could count as one as well. Along with 30Seconds to Mars' Hunter and possibly the Fantasy, and possibly A Perfect Circle's Count Bodies like Sheep song.
