Tips and ideas for spider web makeup.

Spider Web Makeup

Spider webs are a great makeup theme for Halloween parties and other social events.

A spider web draws attention to its center, which makes it the perfect design to place near the eye. From the eye, the web can extend and to sweep across the cheeks or forehead.

Some people also include spiders as part of their look, sometimes in some very conspicuous places. Stencils can sometimes be helpful for the spider, so that you don't have to worry about the fine lines.

However it's done, spider web makeup is a fantastic way to express yourself on special occasions.

Spider Lore

Spiders definitely carry a certain aura about them—not a good one, in the minds of most people.

This dislike probably stems from horror stories that include spiders and the terrifying shock of running into spider webs in wooded areas, basements, or storage areas. Also, some spiders, like the black widow, are potentially very harmful to humans. The very large tarantula also conjures a different type of fear. Urban legends surrounding these arachnids have made many people uncomfortable around spiders.

Which is precisely what makes them such a fun makeup theme—employing spider webs and spiders into makeup designs reminds us of our own fears and uncertainties.

Spider Web Makeup with a Spider Hanging from One Eye

I love how, in this first example, there’s a spider web on one eye and a spider on the other.

The way the spider web comes down from the lower part of the eye looks really nice. Also, drawing the spider dropping down on its silk on the other eye works great. That's another experience most of us have had in our lives: running into a spider hanging in the middle of a room.

In case you didn't notice, this is the same woman in both photos. One shows how she looks with the blue hair. Props like wigs offer you options for different looks.

Gothic Spider Web Makeup

This spider web makeup appealed to me, as a fan of the Gothic look. Gothic makeup and spider webs go hand and hand. In this photo, you can see how they complement one another well.

The dark eyes and lipstick look fantastic with the spider web, and the decision to include a different design on the other eye adds to the mood she's trying to create.

Also take note of the pale foundation. The typical Gothic white is a terrific way to show off the dark lines a spider web. You don't have to be Goth to create this wonderful look for Halloween or other events.

Tribal Spider and Spider Web Makeup

If you're not familiar with what "tribal" means, it's a reference to an art form that is used a lot in the design of tattoos. The style’s geometric patterned swirls and bold black shapes comes from Maori, Polynesian, Samoan, and Filipino cultures, and different designs were used to communicate elements of the wearer's identity.

While this tattoo, of course, is not a true tribal pattern, you can see tribal references in the striking black shapes used in the spider's legs. A few other allusions to tribal style are visible near her temple.

I like this particular spider web makeup not only because of the clean and interesting lines, but also because of the purple accents, which are echoed in her hair. They give her look a different feel.

Final Thoughts

As you can see from this handful of varied examples, there are many different styles of spider web makeup. Which is best for you depends on your personal preferences and desires.

With so many options to choose from, you can see why spider web makeup is so popular for Halloween and other costume parties.
