Spode Christmas Tree China

Spode is well-known for fine china, and their Christmas tree dinnerware is a favorite every holiday season. In 2008, the company marked the 70th anniversary of the popular Spode Christmas china with a Christmas design featuring roses and mistletoe. Spode's original Christmas tree design was created in 1938 by Harold Holdway, a Spode designer who was tasked with coming up with the new design. Unfortunately, Holdway had never actually seen a Christmas tree, according to a press release on the Spode website. The company says Holdway originally designed a tree with gifts hanging from the branches, but had to revise his work when he was told presents went under the tree. That's also how the Spode tree was topped with a Santa instead of a more traditional star or angel.
