St. Patrick's Day Birthday Party Ideas

Updated on April 2, 2014

Holiday Birthdays: Do you need ideas for a St. Patrick's Day birthday celebration?

A Saint Patrick's Day birthday does not automatically dictate a lifetime of corned beef and cabbage birthday dinners! Stand up and be remembered, enjoy your favorites on your special day, and save the traditional Irish fare for another day!

My hubby doesn't hate the traditional corned beef and cabbage of St. Patty's Day fame. However, it's not his fave. Not at all! Make that a plate of tacos and he's happy!

How Would You Celebrate Your Holiday Birthday?

Would you be fine with a birthday accented by all things pertaining to the recognized holiday? Or would you prefer an individualized approach, avoiding all relevant decor, in deference to your celebration of your birth?

How would you celebrate if your birthday was on a popular holiday?

There are many ways to incorporate a holiday theme into the birthday person's celebration, and you have the advantage of the seasonal aisle, where you can select from a number of decorative elements. However, if you don't quite see what you want, there are plenty of online retailers which will accomodate your desire for something unique, both for celebrating, and for gift giving. Make sure you are attentive to the interests of your birthday person, and just because it's St. Patrick's Day, don't presume that green is their thing. They may like the theme, but make sure! Unless you are hosting a roast, in which case, have fun!

Saint Patrick's Day Party Games for Kids

St. Patricks Activities for Kids Birthday Parties

Whether you have a St Patricks Day Birthday Boy or St Patricks Birthday Girl, you may want some fun themed games and activities for a birthday party. Here are a few options:

Find the Gold: Have a treasure hunt, and kids find a pot of gold coins (chocolate) at the end of the search!"It's Not Easy Being Green": Kids brainstorm in groups, in a set time limit (you decide, based on age), making a list of all the green things they can think of."Shamrock Hop": Conduct musical chairs, but have the kids hop around the circle, while the music plays."Luck of the Irish": Conduct "Minute to Win It" style challenges, and see which team has the best luck...or should we say, success!"Lucky Duck": Use St. Patricks Day Ducks and place special markings or numbers on the bottoms. Float them in a Green Party Tub or plastic bin of water. Each child picks a duck and receives the related prize. Make it more interesting for the tween or teen St Patricks Party. Connect the number on each duck to a challenge.

Lucky Dice: This is a fun game that can be adapted for any birthday. Just emphasize luck on a St. Patrick Birthday! Stock up on lots of little trinkets, novelty toys and candies. Make sure you have two or three per participant. Place these in the center of the playing area. A long table or set of tables pushed together is great, or have everyone sit in a big circle with the prize pot in the middle. Pass a pair of dice around the circle or table. Each participant rolls. If he rolls doubles, he chooses a prize or steals someone else's prize. This continues until a set time expires or until all prizes are claimed. With younger children, be sensitive to the stealing concept, and perhaps omit it. It's more fun at the teenage level to include gift stealing as in a White Elephant party, but smaller children may get their feelings hurt.

"Find the Gold" cakes or cupcakes...

If your St. Patrick's Day birthday is an excuse to go all green, have a blast! If not, here are some suggestions for the un-Irish approach!

Nothing against Corned Beef and Cabbage, but...

When our St. Patrick's Day birthday rolls around, it's tacos! The birthday boy, or girl, should be able to celebrate their day their way! Our birthday celebration highlights the birthday person's faves, and it's not corned beef and cabbage! That doesn't mean you can't freeze a nice cut of corned beef for another day, but make the birthday person's day special for them. If they hate green, ditch it, and go for the gold...or whatever color they prefer!

Birthdays are fun, and holiday birthdays, no less so. Take your cues from the birthday person, and plan around their preferences!
