Looking for great stocking stuffer ideas to fill up those Christmas stockings this year?
For over a decade, a major part of my Santa duties each Christmas has been shopping for and stuffing the many stockings at our extended family Christmas gathering. We usually have ten or more stockings to fill, for all ages. Over the years I've learned a lot of good ideas for what to put in a Christmas stocking!
Below you will find dozens of stocking stuffer ideas, broken down by categories such as stocking stuffer ideas for kids, stocking stuffer ideas for men, and so on. Some of the stocking stuffer ideas could work for lots of different kinds of people, so be sure to read through all the lists.

I like to keep a list of facts about family and friends so that I can refer to it each year when I start my stocking shopping. Each year tends to be a little different in my family; some one has a new boyfriend of girlfriend, or somebody has a dear friend who is joining us this year. So I try to keep tabs. I've even been known to look over their Facebook profile to see if I can find their profile and check out a list of their likes and interests!
Here are some good questions to ask when you are trying to think of what to put in some one's stocking:
- Do they have a favorite color? My sister loves brown, and my aunt decorates her bedroom in pink. And everyone in my family knows if it's bright neon colors, it should go in my stocking.
- Do they collect anything? From hedgehog figurines to Magic The Gathering cards, this is a rich area of possibility.
- What are their favorite hobbies? Try to think of some goodies to go with those hobbies, such as Ace bandages and sunscreen for the snowboarder and embroidery floss and watercolor paints for the crafter.
- What is their everyday life like? If they travel for work get them fun luggage tags or a sleep mask; if they can't live without their morning coffee get them a travel mug or a bag of high quality coffee beans.
- What's new in their life? Get the new driver a cool key chain, or matching his-and-hers gifts for newlyweds.
- How do they like to indulge? A favorite candy bar for almost anyone, or a bath pillow for the beauty queen - or how about a soothing eye mask for the overly stressed?
- Regional treats for out-of-town visitors such as regional snacks or memorabilia for the local sports team.
Cheap and Inexpensive Stocking Stuffer Ideas - Buy in cool stuff bulk to fill up that stocking without breaking your budget
To me, choosing every item for each stocking by hand is always part of the fun of playing Santa, but with about a dozen to fill every year it can get a bit daunting. Over the years I've developed a list of go-to items that work for all or most people, so I just buy a bunch and give one to each.
Socks are a classic stocking stuffer, they are affordable and practical - but they can also be fun like these soft and cuddly socks in Christmas patterns. Plus socks take up a fair bit of space for the price!
Another really awesome cheap stocking stuffer idea is the shower poof; again, they are inexpensive and fill the stocking well and also strike a great balance of practical but fun as well. These are good for all ages, and go great with a bottle of shower gel or bubble bath.
These reusable shopping bags are a great environmentally conscious gift, as well as just being darn useful and practical. Buy an assortment of colors like this one and give everyone one in their favorite color.
Should you wrap stocking stuffers?
In my family we have never wrapped stocking stuffers; in fact, I had no idea some families practiced this tradition until the past few years. Since my family puts so much effort into wrapping the bigger gifts and choosing the stocking stuffers carefully, it never even occurred to me. But I've heard some fun stories about this cool Christmas ritual.
My cousin told me about a family friend who puts more stock in the stockings than the presents. Each stocking stuffer is wrapped creatively along with a riddle that must be solved before opening. Another friend of mine made her husband rewrap all her stocking stuffers their first year as a married couple because he'd used the same paper as he'd wrapped other gifts, and he had to use "the Santa paper"!
Does your family giftwrap the stocking stuffers as well as the gifts?
