Strawberry Shortcake Halloween Costumes

Updated on September 14, 2014

Here Comes Strawberry Shortcake! - Strawberry Then and Now

Originally designed in 1977 for the greeting card company American Greetings, Strawberry Shortcake eventually moved away from greeting cards and into a line of childrens' toys and her very own cartoon show in the 1980s.

After the fad was over, Strawberry was little seen and rarely heard from until the 1990s, when she received a makeover. But the fun only lasted a year and Strawberry and her pals were retired again.

In 2003, Strawberry found her way into DVDs and received a brand new redesign, along with some of her pals. New toys as well as a new cartoon were created. This version of Strawberry Shortcake was poorly received.

Fresh off this disappointment, American Greetings rebooted the franchise in 2009, bringing back Strawberry and five of her original friends: Orange Blossom, Lemon Meringue, Raspberry Torte, Plum Pudding, and Blueberry Muffin. They moved to Berry Bitty City in Strawberryland and received a new cartoon show which airs on The Hub network.

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake is the owner of Berry Bitty Cafe, where she loves to cook and make treats for her friends and customers. She loves to spend time with her friends and help them.

Energetic, Strawberry has always been something of a leader among her friends. She has lived in several different places, including a shortcake house, an ornate mansion, and a strawberry. She has always had a cat named Custard and a dog named Pupcake.

Strawberry Shortcake wears a pink and white dress with pink polka dots on the skirt. She wears green and white stripped leggings and a strawberry-shaped hat over her long, pink hair.

Blueberry Muffin

Now the owner of Blueberry Books, Blueberry Muffin is one of Strawberry Shortcake's best friends. She keeps all kinds of books in her store, especially cookbooks for Strawberry. Originally she spoke with a Southern drawl but eventually lost that trait.

Over the years Blueberry has kept a pet mouse named Cheesecake. She was once involved in the theater, and could be a bit of a drama queen. Blueberry also wanted to be a writer.

Blueberry Muffin wears a blue polka dotted shirt under a blue sweater with a blue skirt and pink belt, over green and white stripped leggings She wears a blueberry clip in her blue hair.

Lemon Meringue

Stylish and fashion-forward, Lemon Meringue is the owner of the Lemon Salon in Strawberryland. At one time she claimed to be a model but really was only sharing her "pictures" with family and friends. She has always been close to Raspberry Torte.

Over the years Lemon Meringue has owned a pet frog named Frappé and a pet skunk named Sourball. In the 2009 reboot Lemon Meringue has yet to receive a new pet.

Lemon Meringue wears a yellow top cinched with a blue and green bow over a sky blue skirt and yellow and white striped leggings. She wears a lemon clip in her long blonde hair.

Raspberry Torte

Owner and proprietress of Fresh Fashions Boutique, Raspberry Torte is a fashion designer. She loves to make and sell her creations to her friends. While she and Lemon Meringue are friends, the two get a bit competitive at times when it comes to clothing.

In the early years, Raspberry Torte was known as Raspberry Tart. She lived up to her name but learned to be nicer to her friends. Over the years, she has own a pet monkey and a pet raccoon, both named Rhubarb. She used to also be a lot more into fitness as well as a lot more brash and thoughtless. But these characteristics changed along with her last name.

Raspberry Torte wears a raspberry-colored dress cinched with a green belt and raspberry buckle, with a shrug and green sleeves. She wears stripped leggings and carries a raspberry-shaped purse, and wears a raspberry clip in her wine colored tresses.
