A Beautiful Sugar Skull Costume with DIY Flower Headband or Mask
Wear a Sugar Skull Costume with Marigold Headband or Face Mask for Halloween
Sugar skulls are one of the very popular features of Day of the Dead. These beautiful costumes combine different elements of Dia de los Muertos the skeletons with beautiful colorful flowers to create a unique look for a Halloween costume.
Both of these costume features several aspects of the Day of the Dead holiday including the skulls, skeletons and the marigold or cempasúchil, the flowers used to decorate the altars for the holiday celebrations.
The colorful marigold headpiece, lily hair clips and makeup do not come with the costumes. You can easily create your own rose or flower headband, lily hair clip and own version of a phantom-inspired sugar skull face mask.

A Beautiful Sugar Skull Day of the Dead Costume
Sugar skulls or calavera are one of the main symbols of the Day of the Dead Holiday. They are represented in food (as actual ornately decorated colorful skulls made from sugar) in masks, in decorations and in the costumes.
This beautiful skeleton inspired costume is designed in black, red and white with a skull print fabric and accented with black lace and a colorful rainbow trim. A red sequin heart is attached to the bodice.
The costume comes with separate lace sleeves and a decorative black lace neck accessory highlighted by a skeleton head applique.
Add a marigold covered flower headband (instructions below), a petticoat, your own shoes and detailed face makeup or mask to complete this beautiful Day of the Dead costume.
An easy way to create the sugar skull look without having to do full face makeup is by wearing one of the pre-made latex face masks or using temporary face tattoos as seen below.
For a look at the front of this costume see the image below or look at the photo at the top of this page.
History of Marigolds with Day of the Dead
The flowers used to decorate the altars in Mexico during Day of the Dead are what we refer to as marigolds. They are also known as cempasúchil.
Marigolds are used since these flowers are available in the fall of year.

Make a Flower Headband
Using Marigolds or Roses
How to Make a Marigold Flower Headband
In this close up of the Beauty Sugar Skull Costume you get an idea of the makeup involved as well as the beautiful flower headband made of marigolds or cempasúchil, which does not come with the costume, but can easily be created as your own custom accessory.
There are a couple of ways to make the marigold covered headband. I've included basic instructions for both.
Create a Flower Headpiece using a Headband
The easiest is to start with a headband with or without a flower already on it and then get more marigolds or other flowers to fill out the rest of the headband.
Remove the stems from the artificial flowers and attach the base of the flower with hot glue or by wiring the flower to the headband.
With a headband base, you don't necessarily need to cover up the entire headband, some could be showing through.
Create a Flower Headpiece Using a Wire Base
The flower headpiece shown here could also have been crafted by joining different flowers together via wire. Chriselle Lim does a great job explaining how to link flowers together in her video below.
Once the marigolds or roses are linked together you can bend the linked flower wires to create a headband. Secure with bobby pins on your head.

Supplies Needed to Make a Flower Headband
Making an artificial silk flower covered headband is pretty simple. You only need a few additional materials after you've picked out your flowers.
Note that the headband can be optional, depending on the style of headpiece you are crafting.
- Headband - With or without flowers on it
- Flowers - Marigolds or Roses
- Craft Wire
- Wire cutters
Marigolds, Headbands and Extras
A marigold flower headband can be easily fashioned by clipping several flowers to a headband. Use a plain colored headband or a colorful one (of you want more of it to show) and attach several colors of flowers.

This rose headpiece is so striking that you can just pair it with an old dress and shawl, put on some sugar skull makeup and you have a great Dia de los Muertos costume.
Supplies Needed to Make a Rose Headpiece
As seen in the video above by Chriselle Lim making a roses headpiece only requires a few supplies: flowers, craft wire and some black lace fabric.
- Assorted Artificial Silk Flowers (Roses, Marigolds or Mums)
- Craft Wire
- Wire Cutters
- Black Lace Fabric

Sexy Sugar Skull Phantom Mask Costume
Day of the Dead Skeleton / Phantom Women's Costume
The costume design for this Day of the Dead Skeleton Costume is an interesting combination of inspirations.
This colorful Dia de los Muertos costume looks to be in part inspired by the phantom of the opera with the half mask and in part by an Alpine dirndl with the tight bodice lacing up the front.
The dress comes with a colorful skull print fabric in two different colors with faux ribbon lacing detailing up the center. The dress is accented with a black lace, a rainbow stripe trim and bright faux flowers
The costume comes with a matching rainbow scarf with fringe trim and sugar skeleton half face mask.
It is a beautiful look on it's own and could be paired with a Day of the Dead Skeleton costume for men to create a couples costume.
Add in your own shoes, petticoat and flowers to complete the look.

Make a Lily Hair Clip
How to Make Flower Hair Clip
If you want your Day of the Dead Skeleton / Phantom costume to look like the modeled version, you will need to add in your own tiger lily flower clips in your hair and perhaps even a few attached to your dress.
Making a Flower hair clip is pretty simple. You need the artificial flowers, some hair clips or alligator clips and a glue gun or super glue if you don't have a glue gun. Take a look at a couple of the video clips that I found to give you an idea.
After you have taken the flower off of the stem, look at the back side of the flower and the plastic piece used to attach the flower to the stem. If you are lucky, you may be able to just glue the alligator clip at an angle to the base of the flower, since it will be attaching at an angle.
If there is too much bulk at the base of the flower, undo the plastic end and then glue the remaining parts of the flower together before gluing the flower to the clip.
If all of this is too much work, you could just order one from Amazon. This orange tiger lily flower clip to the right is quite large. It measures 6 inches. If you get the flowers and make you own, you may have several lovely flower hair clips to give away as gifts.

Make a Day of the Dead Phantom Mask
How to Make a Day of the Dead Phantom Mask
The Day of the Dead Women's Skeleton Costume comes with the mask to the right, but if you wanted to make your own you could easily create one out of a plain Phantom of the Opera mask like the one seen below.
I recommend using a paper mache mask because they are more substantial than the plastic ones and will last longer.
Take a look at many of the different Day of the Dead sugar skull looks that are online or the ones that I've collected in the Day of the Dead Masks and Makeup pages. Find a style (or styles) that you like.
Then start decorating. To make it easy use marking pens or Sharpies in assorted colors. If you have a steady hand for painting, use paint, or even nail polish.
Finish off the mask with a layer of non-toxic acrylic gloss to keep the colors from rubbing off.
