Girls Sweet 16 Themes

Updated on December 13, 2010

Party planning should always be taken seriously - and none more so than when planning sweet 16 themes. Any birthday is important but one or two stand out from the rest, one of which is our 16th birthday.

Partly cultural and partly due to modern media, such as the TV series My Super Sweet 16, it's now ultra cool and trendy to host a sweet 16 party - as well as spend hours musing over sweet 16 dresses!

And why not?! Turning 16 signifies coming to the end of formal schooling, the latter end of your childhood - the year most of us enter college and start seriously thinking on our futures.

It's a year of many decisions, many changes - and enjoying a fantastic night of fun can become the highlight ... or high night! ... of the whole year.

For some, their sweet sixteen will become something that lives with them way beyond their teen years - and why shouldn't it?

You only turn 16 once ... celebrating it to the fullest has got to be the best way to welcome the start of the rest of your life!

There are various sweet 16 themes, many of which will depend on your budget and venue size as much as the soon to be sweet 16 themselves.

On the left you will find a list of sweet 16 themes, to give you a fairly comprehensive idea of the different décor styles and party decorations and accessories that you may require.

Of course - all the planning must involve your sweet sixteen, else (horror of horrors!) you'll have a rather put out party princess on your hands.

That said ... you do need to set down the parameters. Whilst we've all enjoyed the highs and lows that have been publiscly displayed on My Super Sweet 16 - most of us don't have a millionaire's budget!

The Twilight theme is a new favorite. Lots of scope to use a red and black décor - the tables, lighting, wall decorations and more. A casual but smart dress code, hire a stunning Edward and Bella type of car for your sweet 16's arrival.

Hot Chocolate - soooo yummy! Choose dark browns and caramels or browns and purples for the décor. Install chocolate fountains and candy and fruit fondue foods. Have the invites created from chocolate, use small chocolate gift baskets as centre pieces.

Hot Pink - lots of pink décor, candles, centre pieces and balloons. All the girls wear pink, pink candy, pink foods, a pink birthday cake. Make it sugary or make it hot - you decide.

All the suggested ideas are easy to create, with a little imagination. Just be honest, realistic and mindful of the fact that whilst most teens realize that money doesn't grow on trees - they kind of hope it does!

Sweet 16 Cakes

For many, sweet 16 cakes can become an issue. However, once you've chosen the theme itself, the cake should seem so difficult.

Either purchase or bake a cake that fits in with the sweet 16 theme - if you're going to throw a pink party then a pink colored cake with all the trimmings makes perfect sense.

A chocolate party? Easy ... a rich and delicious chocolate cake. Twilight? A tiered cake, encorporating the black, red and white colors that are synonymous with the book covers.

Winter Wonderland - a sumptious white frosted cake. Think about snowflakes, iciles and snowmen.

You can choose appropriate cake toppers - a small selection is featured below and to the right. They're a fantastic way of finishing of your sweet 16 cake and will add that much needed unique party touch.

Sweet 16 Decorations

There are a wide variety of sweet 16 decorations and of course you need to choose them according to your intended sweet 16 theme.

Some of the most popular are featured below, to give you a good idea of what's available, the cost and which are the most popular - as those are the ones that have been carefully selected to help provide you with ideas.

For many of the themes, you can source the decorations from individual sources. As an example, a Twilight party means that you can use decorations such as red ribbon, black and red tablecloths and balloons.

For a chocolate party - lots of real chocolate is a great start. Glamorous purple balloons, ribbons and matching confetti. Use mini chocolate fountains as centre pieces and have place names iced onto chocolate 'cards'.

A beach style party ... a few inflatables, such as palm trees would look great. Sea shells and pinatas, cocktail umbrellas and even the odd surfboard or beach ball.

In truth .. you could have an amazing amount of fun dreaming up ways to decorate sweet 16 themes and there's no need to spend vast amounts of money. Once you've chosen the actual backdrop for the party ... the sky really is the limit!
