Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Halloween Costumes for Kids

Updated on September 23, 2014

The Green Fab Four are back this Halloween! The 2012 cartoon reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is taking the world by storm! Who will you choose this Halloween: Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo or Raphael? Time to suit up and trick or treat for some pizza!

Who Are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984, as the protagonists of a comic book series published by Mirage Studios. Though they achieved minor popularity, it wasn't until the pair was approached by Playmates Toys Inc, that things took off. Developed into an animated series targeted at children, complete with a line of action figures, the Turtles became household names.

The story follows the four turtles - Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael - who were mutated by "ooze" to become humanoid. Raised by Splinter, their Sensi who happens to be a rat (or a man who was turned into a rat, depending on the backstory), the four brothers are trained in the arts of ninjutsu. They are aided and befriended by April O'Neil (originally a news reporter, now a teenage girl in the 2012 cartoon.) Their main enemy has always been the Shredder, the name taken by Oroku Saki who leads the Foot Clan.

In 1990, the first live-action movie was released, the Turtles being portrayed by actors in partially animatronic suits with additional actors doing their voices. Two more movies would follow before the series seemed to fall out of popularity. The animated series received its first reboot in 1997, but was cancelled after one season. Another reboot was attempted in 2003 and aired until 2009.

In 2012, the TMNT franchise received a rebooted cartoon on Nickelodeon that received the green light for a 4th season in 2014. A live-action film reboot, directed by Michael Bay, was released in August 2014.

Leader in Blue

Named after the Italian painter, inventor, and sculptor Leonardo da Vinci, Leo is considered the leader of the four brothers. Devoted to the study of the martial arts, Leonardo often displays the most discipline and courage of the Turtles. He also assumes a sort of parental figure role, caring for his siblings when things are rough.

Leonardo wields two, razor-sharp katanas and wears the blue mask.

Seeing Red

Raph, as his brothers call him, is the bad boy with the heart of gold. Named for the Italian painter and architect of the Renaissance, he is the most aggressive of the Turtles, which seems to get him into trouble more often than not. Quick with sarcasm, he tends to be a loner at times, making it difficult for his brothers to connect with him.

Raphael wields a pair of sais and wears a red mask.

Passionate Purple

Donatello, considered the "geek" or "brains" of the four, is most passionate about all things technical. His ability to invent and engineer vehicles, robots, and other items helps the Turtles in their fight against the Foot Clan. Although Don is quite proficient in bojutsu, he displays the least violence of the brothers, using gadgets and his intellect to solve problems. He is named after the Italian sculptor and artist.

Dontalleo uses a long bo staff and wears the purple mask.

Outrageous Orange

Most often considered the youngest brother, Michelangelo is sometimes more interested in having fun then fighting. Named for the Italian Renaissance painter, Mikey is usually the comic relief in the group. He is most passionate about pizza and tends to have a slight "surfer dude" air.

Michelangelo wields a pair of nunchucks and wears an orange mask.
