The Munsters group Halloween costume
Dressing up as The Munsters for Halloween
'The Munsters' was an American television show running from 1964 to 1966, starring Fred Gwnne and Yvonne de Carlo as Herman Munster and his wife Lily. The show was a satire of the traditional family shows of the time, with the general plot being that of the hard working husband, stay-at-home wife, eccentric older relative and two younger members of the family, but with the twist that they were all monsters (with the exception of the 'plain' Marilyn Munster, on the right in the cast photo here).
'The Munsters' was repeated on British television when I was little and I loved it. I particularly liked Herman and the situations he found himself in, and the way Grandpa used to come out from his lab under the staircase.
n this article, I have put together some ideas for you to create your own Munsters costume this Halloween, regardless of who your favourite is.

Why dress up as The Munsters this Halloween?
The Munsters make a great group Halloween costume, and the adult characters are balanced equally between male and female characters, which can be rare for good Halloween costumes. This makes The Munsters perfect for two couples to dress up together.
Herman Munster (played by Fred Gwynne) is the father of the family and based upon the Frankenstein's monster look from the Boris Karloff movies.
To get the Herman Munster look you will need:
1. A dark suit (brown or black is fine), preferably in a baggy fit.
2. A black t-shirt.
3. Black boots.
4. Either a mask or green face paint.
5. Hair gelled into a Frankenstein's monster look as in the picture.
If you prefer a mask to face paint and hair gel, there are some good ones to be found on Amazon below.

'The Munsters' or 'The Addams Family'?
'The Munsters' and 'The Addams Family' are both fondly remembered shows, with similar premises that both ran on television at the same time, but which is your favourite? Have your say below.

Lily Munster (played by Yvonne De Carlo) is Herman's beautiful wife, an undead vampire from Transylvania.
To get the Lily Munster look you will need:
1. A long flowing dress similar to the one in the pictures on this lens.
2. Long dark hair, with white stripes.
3. Heavy Gothic make-up

Grandpa Munster (played by Al Lewis) is Lily's father, an undead vampire from Transylvania. He has a laboratory in the cellar and is frequently working on something down there. He often turns himself into a bat, like Dracula in the Bram Stoker novel.
For your Grandpa Munster costume, you will need:
1. Black tuxedo
2. White formal shirt and white bow tie
3. A gold medallion on a red ribbon (see picture)
4. Hair styled into a 'Dracula' style centre-parting (again, see picture).

If you'd rather not wear a mask, try this vampire wig.
The daughter of Lily's sister, Marilyn is referred to by Herman as the 'plain' one of the family. Marilyn's costume isn't as distinctive as the others, with her being the 'normal' looking one (see the group photo at the top of the page). A blonde wig and a 60's style dress should do it, although this one won't be particularly recognisable unless stood with the other members of the family.
