The Best Movie and TV Trivia Board Games

Updated on April 10, 2014

Movies or TV whatever your specialty there is a game to suit!

I should begin with a confession. I am a trivia tragic. I spent 6 years writing and running a weekly pub quiz and I am also the organiser of the Australian Quizzing Association so I have a bit of a habit ;-) I also own every single version of Trivial Pursuit that has been released in Australia. Boxes and boxes of board games sit in the cupboard in our spare room waiting for any occasion I can find to get them down and spend a few hours playing with friends.

Since Trivial Pursuit was invented in Canada the 1980s, these have really taken off. In pubs and clubs around the world groups of friends sit around and test themselves on all things trivial, week in week out. Trivia can include everyone, you don't need to be super smart, trivia is about everyday things, which is why these make great gifts for family and friends.

Here are some of my favorites - you might like to check out for yourself or for your gift shopping list.

Trivial Pursuit : The 20th Anniverary edition - The classic we all know and love

Can you believe that Trivial Pursuit has been around for more than 20 years. It was invented in 1979 by 2 Canadian guys, Scott Abbot and Chris Haney when they found some of their Scrabble pieces missing. The game has now been translated into 17 languages and you can play it the old fashioned way with a board, online or on your i-phone. I still think the original way is the most fun.

See the full range of Trivial Pursuit games

Never played this board game classic? - Watch this video for an introduction

Trivial Pursuit is THE classic quiz board game. Learn more about it by pressing play below.

These games have something for everyone - Choose a decade or a topic and specialize

If you are playing with less passionate trivia fans then this selection of games might be a good starting place. The idea with trivia is to feel good about what you know not end up feeling silly because you can not answer anything. I always try to match the game to the age or interests of the group.

A nice new twist - most people play in teams anyway but this version is set up that way. Great for family get togethers.

Get the kids involved. This version has adult and kids questions meaning no one gets left out. I have played this with children as young as 7 years.

Everyone loves the 80s and these questions are a little easier than the Genius edition. Perfect for anyone born in the 50s and 60s.

No more complaining "I don't want to play, I hate history questions" when you have this edition. All of the questions are pop culture based meaning no one has to feel stupid if they don't know the world's longest river!

Memory not so good? The 90s edition is perfect for multi generational groups or families with teens.

Which game do you prefer? - Do you prefer the cards and pie or the video action in Scene It?

Which trivia board game series do prefer?

Trivia based on your favourite TV shows - Perfect for the TV fan who already has the DVD series

Have you seen every single episode of Seinfeld? Are you a mad Simpson's fan? These TV themed games are perfect for a true fan, giving them the opportunity to show off their knowledge and impress their friends.

Do you know the name of Joey's leather recliner? Or Monica's boyfriends? This game will provide hours of fun for Friends fans.

Seinfield fans tend to be pretty passionate and with all the re-runs it is hard to find anyone who has not watched this show. Test your knowledge of Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine crazy antics in this fun trivia game.

Scene It - Play it on your own screen

The "Scene it" series of games are perfect for the movie trivia format. Most are suitable for 2-4 players or 2 teams. Half of the questions use the DVD in the box and the others are card based. You have to name a film from a short scene or still clip or perhaps from a quote.

Are you a movie buff? - All the questions on your favorite movie or movie genre in one place

These these are perfect for movie buffs. You can buy versions that focus on one film franchise like Bond or Star War or you choose ones that are tailored to a decade or genre. These are great for large families and intergenerational games. A fun way to end Thanksgiving lunch or even Christmas dinner.

Scene It? Box Office Smash Bundle - Xbox 360
Scene It? Box Office Smash Bundle - Xbox 360

This has fast become my favorite Scene It game because of the great movies it features. Questions on 250 blockbuster movies some recent and and lots of great cult classics appear. Movies include Monty Python, Little Miss Sunshine, Rocky, Knocked Up, Ferris Bueller's Day Off

and Field of Dreams making this perfect for the whole extended family.

While the makers suggest this game is suitable for kids 6 years and over I think you can begin a little earlier than that. All the great Pixar and Disney movies feature including Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Hannah Montana, and even High School Musical. While there is a lot of new stuff there is still enough older Disney stuff to keep the whole family interested.

My tip... Be prepared to lose if you are playing with a group of 8 year olds.

Do you know who sang the theme from Goldfinger? Or which James Bond was Australian? If so this is probably the game for you.

Movie and Trivia Games on your Console - Wii, Xbox and Playstation games

Another confession - I don't really like playstation or xbox. In fact I never played them at all and saw no reason to buy one till I discovered Buzz at a friends house one night and quickly became a convert. Adding a buzz to the game made it just like playing on TV and increased the excitement 10 fold. Needless to say I went and bought a second hand console and now have half a dozen quizzing games for it.

Already got this one? See the full range of Wii trivia and quiz games

More Wii and Playstation Quiz fun - Trivia for a new generation

With the rise of console games trivia and quiz games are getting a new lease of life. I actually helped write some of the questions for the Buzz family edition and I can tell you it is a whole lot of fun!

Choose your degree of difficulty in this fun version based on the popular tv show. The questions here are a little harder than the average trivia game but great for anyone who wants to be challenged.

Where you can play online? - Find some fun online for free

Sometimes it can be hard to find friends who enjoy board games as much as I do - I can not understand why but some people hate them. At times like these online trivia games can be lots of fun.

I probably do best when it comes to questions about cartoons, like naming Donald Duck's three nephews. That might be the only question I get right. Growing up as one of 14 kids, we played a lot of board games, but mostly monopoly. Thanks for sharing. I am fairly new here and I think it takes forever to get the magic number of 20 squid likes. My lens called "How to Bid Smart on DealDash" needs one more. Is there an easy way to get squid likes?
