Halloween Trunk or Treating

Updated on September 29, 2016

Trunk or Treat in Pendleton SC

Every Halloween, our church sponsors "Trunk or Treating" in Pendleton, SC. The volunteers ask church members and friends to bring their cars to the church with their trunks decorated so the children can come by and get their treats out of the trunk. It is open to everyone and the children come in costume as do many of their parents. It seems to get bigger and better every year. There are really some creative people out there and it is amazing what they can come up with to make the trunk of a car look inviting.

What Exactly Is "Trunk or Treating"?

A Fun Alternative or Addition to Trick or Treating

"Trunk or Treating" has gained in popularity in recent years as more and more parents are afraid for their children to go door to door. It is sometimes called Halloween Tailgate which is a fun name, too. There are so many carnivals and Church events on Halloween night that our church has Trunk or Treating the Sunday before Halloween. This gives the children another day to wear their costumes. Our local High School had Trunk or Treat at the High School football game this year since it fell on a Friday. I heard that was lots of fun, too!

My trunk (a couple of years ago) - a big Smiley Face filled with candy - This Trunk or Treat Idea was fun

My trunk (a couple of years ago) - a big Smiley Face filled with candy

Smiley Face Trunk

A friend and I worked on this one and had a great time. I took some old black sheets that were left over from my son's college days and then used a big Smiley Face Monitor Cover. Do you remember those? When PCs first became popular, it was fun to decorate it and my sister sent me this one. I knew not to throw it away........it would come in handy someday!

2008 Trunk or Treat - We had a great time!

Idea for My Trunk or Treat

Last year I had asked the Squidoo Community to make suggestions for how I should decorate my trunk. My sister Joan had the best idea. She said that I should use "Zeke". "Zeke" is an old hillbilly "man" that our friends, the Quattlebaums, used to have sitting out front of their Antique Shop. Zeke has been around for a long time and there are lots of fun stories about him. We used to borrow him and put him on the front porch of my dad's house for our family Thanksgiving. Our neighbors borrowed them one year because their daughter had asked for a man for Christmas. They put Zeke under the tree with her name on him. He was at a Honey Do party given for our son with the name of his imaginary friend on him. So you see old Zeke is a part of Pendleton and Last year he was at Trunk or Treat.

Pendleton United Methodist Church does a great community service by providing Trunk or Treat on the square or at the church. All the children seemed to be having a great time and we sure did appreciate all the people who came with their decorated trunks and lots of candy. We had 20 trunks that were very clever and I think it is safe to say that A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!

I haven't, actually. Our "sister" church (which is much larger than we are) has a harvest festival every year for Halloween with games and all kinds of fun things. It's open to the whole community, and seems to attract more and more people each year :o) A really fun lens - loved all the cute photos!

I've never been to a trunk or treating event, but it sounds amazing. It is scary to take your kids out these days with all of the things that can happen with the candy and stuff. When we were kids we'd eat the apples we got, now you don't even touch them, and you have to throw out any candy you get that has opened wrappers and stuff. Halloween isn't what it used to be for sure.~BLESSED~

Our church did Trunk-or-Treat this year and it was a huge hit. There was also hot food provided as well as face painting and a bouncy castle for the kids. It's nice to have an alternative to the traditional walk the streets door-to-door type of Halloween. Great lens.

What a wonderful way to show ones' creativity and keep the kiddies safe! In a rural community in Illinois, they have a "Grand March" at a local gymnasium for kids and give away prizes for best costumes and then all the children flock to the square downtown where they "Trick or Treat" the business all along the square. Some of the businesses give away coupons and stuff to the parents. It's a neat idea too! Times sure have changed since I was little!

YES! Our community does it at the local high school (Swedesboro, NJ) every year. Unfortuneately, I missed it this year with my two foster sons as we had another Halloween party to attend. In years past we've had a blast and it does seem to be getting more popular every year with more folks tailgating and treating the kids to elaborate games and such. It is a safe alternative for families who want to have the trick or treating experience in a safer setting during daylight hours. great lens - 5 stars !

Still hard here to ask people to celebrate Halloween instead of All Saints Day and Day of Deads. I love your lens! Rated 5 stars !

Great way to get the community together, instead of everyone at their own homes by themselves. Looks like a fun event, and maybe other's will start doing it too in their community.

What a terrific idea. Our little community of Temple, PA holds a HUGE Halloween parade and neighborhood decorating contest every year; this would be a perfect "add-on" activity for the kids - thanks for the fun idea. 5*s! Lensrolled to my Halloween lenses.

Our little town does something a bit similar. Everyone who dresses up parades up and down Broadway after dark. Many of the little businesses open, or stay open, or just sit right outside the door with candy and decorations. The volunteer fire department even gets into it, with a truck all shined up and lit up and treats. It's great fun! I bet trunk or treating is just as much fun :D

What a really cool idea. Looks like the people decorating their trunks have as much fun as the kids getting the treats. :)

Most of the churches in our area have done this for several years now. It is quite a hit, and a lot safer for the kids. Good job on the lens!

What a great idea! Trick or Treat safety becomes more and more important all the time, it's great when communities come together to preserve this pastime so that Hallowe'en can be enjoyed by kids in this crazy world. Thanks for sharing!

Well, for heaven's sake -- what a marvelously UNIQUE idea for Halloween -- how many hearses show up decorated with a coffin and all the fixings? Love your cool lens.

Halloween has never been a big thing here in the UK although some kids have taken it up in the last few years - usually the worst aspects! I think the trunk or treating is charming and takes away the sometimes threatening aspect of having children calling on dark evenings especially for elderly people living on their own.
