Ugly Christmas Sweaters for Sale: Rounding up the Best Options

Updated on November 15, 2012

Ugly Sweaters are All Around You - If You Can Bear to Look

Looking for ugly Christmas sweaters for sale? If so, you're in luck. Thanks to the booming popularity of ugly Christmas sweater parties, there are plenty of options to choose from these days.

Christmas is without a doubt the tackiest time of the year. Apparently the fashion police go on holiday just like everybody else, or else there would be paddy wagons full of fashion offenders every December. That's the way it's always been. However, a few years back people started openly flaunting their bad taste at holiday parties. Sometimes there's even a competition involved to see who can show up with the most hideous and/or hilarious attire.

What do you do if you're invited to one of these things? Well, if you've got boxes of vintage clothes from the 80s sitting in your basement, that would be, like, totally awesome. Otherwise, there are loads of stores online that are selling great awful sweaters designed precisely for these occasions. Here's a tour of some of the most shocking monstrosities out there.

Made-to-be-Ugly Ugly Sweaters

Once upon a time, people went to ugly Christmas sweater parties wearing actual, unintentionally bad sweaters - often ones they used to wear themselves, with no sense of irony. This was the 90s, when people were first starting to comprehend the immense cheesiness of the previous decade. These days, most people don't have clothing from the 80s laying around, but the ugly sweater trend has gotten so big that companies have jumped in to fill the gap.

As a result, you can now find a wide selection of hideous sweaters for sale online. The one pictured here has a kitschy design, but what really sets it apart is that it lights up. With the push of a hidden button, LED lights flash around the Christmas trees and on the goofy snowmen.

Check out these other fugly sweaters you can buy new.

Shop eBay for Awesomely Ugly Sweaters

Buying a new tacky Christmas sweater is certainly convenient, but there are also a couple of disadvantages. One, new sweaters are expensive - even the ugly ones. And two, they can't top the authentic cheesiness of the 80s sweaters that inspired them.

Fortunately, you can pick up a lot of hideous old sweaters on eBay, usually for less than what you would pay for a new sweater. If you're only planning to wear the sweater once for a party, this might be the best way to go.

Vintage, Weird, Handmade Sweaters

A lot of people choose to make their own ugly Christmas sweaters by adding ribbons, tinsel, or even Christmas lights to an old sweater that's just lying around (or one they picked up used). If you don't have the time or skills to do that, a great alternative is, where you can find all sorts of vintage, handmade, and repurposed clothing. In many cases, you can get an ugly sweater that costs less - and is more of an eyesore - than most of the new ones you can find online.

Want something that's kitschy, without being tacky or cheap? Check out the sweater pictured here. It probably won't win any ugly sweater contests - it's too nice. However, the cheesy bow and candles add a note of irony to an elegant piece of clothing you would be proud to wear anywhere.

A Christmas Story Sweater

You'll WANT to Shoot Your Eyes Out

Remember A Christmas Story? Of course you do - they run the movie incessantly on TV around Christmastime. This custom-made sweater recalls two of its most memorable scenes, both having to do with (appropriately enough) tacky items. On one side is the infamous leg lamp, which Ralphie's dad wins in a contest and insists on displaying in the window. On the other is the pink bunny suit Ralphie gets as a Christmas present from his Aunt Clara.

If you're serious about winning an ugly sweater contest, this could be a good choice. Not only is it ugly, but it scores nostalgia points by reminding people of a beloved holiday classic. In other words, it's tough to beat.

Want to get in on the ugly sweater craze without actually, you know, wearing a sweater? Perhaps, like me, you've been permanently scarred by past sweater-wearing experiences and now can't bear the thought of wearing one, even for an evening. Fortunately, you can find lots of shirts and other clothes that have the tacky Christmas sweater concept, without all the itchy, bulky, oogey warmness of an actual sweater.

Take these pajamas, for example. I sense a new trend on the way. Ugly Christmas pajama party, anyone?
