Valentine's Day: 14 Things I Love About You

Updated on September 2, 2015

A Tribute to the Love of My Life

You've asked me before why I love you. It'd be easier to list what's NOT to love. In the spirit of "shouting it from the rooftops", I thought writing this article as a tribute to my favorite person would be a nice way of letting you know just why you are so special to me. In no particular order, here are a few of the most endearing things about you.

Your Habit of Putting Others First

The compassion and empathy you have for other sentient beings (those close to you and those you don't even know) is without limits. You go out of your way to meet the needs of everyone else. And, even better, you're learning to take your own needs into consideration - very sexy!

Marcel Proust

Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.

Your Sense of Humor

From the groaners to the belly laughs, and everything in between, not a day goes by that you don't make me laugh. And, on those rare occasions when we've had to be apart and weren't able to communicate, thinking of you made me smile.

Speaking of smiles, I love seeing yours. And I love hearing you laugh.

Laughter is the music of the heart, without a laugh we don't have music and without music we don't have joy.

— Ishi Barrientos

Your Strength

Often, I don't think you realize just what you're capable of. You've had to endure your share of hardship and sadness, but you never let any of it sink your spirit.

You're My Best Friend

You're my favorite person, and I love spending time with you. We complement each other well, and we're very like-minded, while still able to remain objective in our individual differences. And. when we don't agree on something, we're at least respectful of each other's thoughts and feelings.

I Wish For You

To continue to grow and thrive

To succeed at reaching your goals

To endure your hardships with grace and confidence

To feel happy, safe and loved

To always have a peaceful mind

You Tolerate My Idiosyncracies

Only on the rarest of occasions do you lose your patience over my many little quirks, rituals and pet peeves.

You've Got My Back

It means a lot to me that you are supportive of my goals and aspirations. You encourage me to explore my true Self and find my path in this life. It means even more to me that you allow me to help you as you seek the same things.

You Give Me Room to Breathe

You don't smother me or crowd me. You're secure enough in yourself that you don't feel the need to constantly cling to me as if I might fly away if you don't. You keep a respectful distance at times when I need more space, but I know that you are always there if I need a hug.

What You Give

"Everybody needs a special kind of love,

And you're the only one I'm thinkin' of.

You mean the world to me.

You are my only."

~ Tesla

Your Intelligence

One of the most important components of a relationship is communication. Our ability to have creative, stimulating conversations is something I enjoy a great deal. I love hearing about your interests and getting your opinions on different topics. I also love our lazy Sundays solving the New York Times Crossword Puzzle together. I love brainstorming and coming up with ideas together.

You Don't Complain About Snaking the Drain

It's a Dirty Job

I have a lot of hair. Most of it seems to wind up in the drain. Gross as it is, you snake the drain and have not once complained about having to do so.

Your Determination

Earlier this month, you accepted a job that you knew you wouldn't like, because it was the only one available. It makes you miserable, but you keep going in every day. You told me you don't have a choice. I don't believe that; I believe we ALWAYS have a choice. You are simply choosing to endure unhappiness in order to get us out of a bad situation, rather than do nothing about it. I love you for it, and I admire your determination.

You Genuinely Revel in the Happiness of Others

Especially when you are the reason for it. But, even when you are not directly responsible for putting smiles on the faces of others, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside to see that they are satisfied. Whether they've just discovered a solution for a minor problem, or they've experienced something that has them elated, you enjoy seeing others' enjoyment.

Your Willingness and Enthusiasm to Grow and Change

Change is sometimes difficult to accept. It can also be difficult to change the way we perceive things. You are willing to evolve as a person, to let go of what is harmful, and to embrace new opportunities and experiences. You are able to use mistakes as a learning experience, rather than dwelling on them.

The Way You Hold Me

As if you never want to release me. I feel safe and warm in your arms. I can feel your heart beating, and our breathing starts to synchronize. Your cheek laying against my hair. My face pressed into your neck, I breathe in the comforting scent of you.

Your Courage

Your ability to do the right thing, instead of simply going along with the herd is a rare and admirable trait.

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

— Nelson Mandela
