Valentine's Day Food Ideas

Updated on February 11, 2014

Food from the Heart!

Need some loving food ideas for Valentine's Day? Well, just go to your favorite recipe page or a beloved cook book and I guarantee that you will find inspiration. All you have to do is change some well chosen words in a recipe and you will have your Valentine's Day food! I have made it easy for you by supplying a few romantically renamed recipes below.

Yes, just change the name of the recipe. What could be easier than that? If it is a favorite recipe, then you most likely have the ingredients on hand. (This could save you some money, too.) I bet that if you are an avid baker, you already have heart shaped pans or cupcake wrappers in pink and red. If you do not have heart shaped pans, there is an easy way you can make a heart cake--just keep on scrolling down to find the pattern.

Just visit your "pantry" and I promise you will find something that needs to be used up before it expires! For example, I have so many little jars of red sugar left from Christmas, I know I will have no trouble sprinkling red hot emotion on French Toast on February 14th.

See what I mean?

Ideas for your Valentine's Day Menu: - Serve up your passion!

Need a romantic recipe? Here is one solution: Take everyday recipes and make them loveable by giving them a new, passionate name.

Since French has been called "the language of love", maybe use it in your project to give food a romantic feeling. Ina Garten's book, Barefoot in Paris has several recipe suggestions that sound oh so passionate like vichyssoise, mousse, remoulade, boeuf Bourguignon, or coeur a la creme.

Once you have your menu, you can print it up. Cool. Or Hot? Here is a source for menu templates for your romantic evening: Valentine's Day Menu Templates.

  • Mac and Cheese can become Heartwarming Macaroni and Fromage (cheese in French)
  • Heart shaped Hamburgers can be turned into Love Patties (or Amour de Boeuf)!
  • French Toast sprinkled with red sugar can be renamed Hot French Toast

Use a large heart shaped cookie cutter on the bread slices. My recipe uses 1 cup milk and 1 egg mixed well. Optional additions: 1/4 cup orange juice, or 1 TB of orange flavored liquor, or dash of cinnamon. Fry in a medium hot skillet coated with a spray oil or 1 TB canola. Flip only once.

  • Call a red velvet cake "You Make Me Blush Cake" or "My Heart for You on a Platter". .
  • Mini Spinach Quiche Appetizers can be called "Love Bites".

"You are special today!" Plate for your Valentine! - A Plate that Sends a Loving Message:

I have one of these plates and use it for all special occasions. In other words, you can use it all year long--not just for Valentine's Day. You get more bang for the buck. I try to use this plate on birthdays!

It is so very easy for children to create a meaningful Valentine Sweet Treat for their family. That treat will also be more meaningful because it is handmade by and for someone special.

Cook time: 30 min
Ready in: 30 min
Yields: One Family (or more depending on # in the family)

  • 12 -24 pre-made cupcakes from a mix
  • pre-made cake icing
  • Candy in shades of red
  • pink and white
  • Decorating sugar in Valentine shades
  • Valentine plate
  • Valentine toothpicks embellishments

  1. The children can help to make the cupcakes if they are old enough and you have the time, space and patience. My grand-daughters were ages 5 and 6 when I let them go wild making and decorating the cupcakes for their family. I did not limit how much icing nor how many candies that they used on the cupcakes--that made things a whole lot more fun for everyone involved. Just let your kids "go to town" and be who they are.

A Book of Romantic Recipes -- Barefoot in Paris! - wonderful "French" food

I love this cookbook and use it all the time. Favorite recipes of mine include "Brussels Sprouts Lardons" , "rack of lamb Persillade" and "Potato Chips". One that I am dying to try is her "Chocolate Orange Mousse".

Her recipes are almost always simple and easy to follow. I have several Barefoot cookbooks and drool over them almost daily.

Serve "Love Apples" on Valentine's Day

Grilled or Baked, still a sweet thing to eat!

Don't know what a "love apple" is? Well, it is a tomato and because of that name, this lovely food was banned in Rome Click banned in Rome to read all about that story. It could make for some interesting conversation on your romantic evening.

If you want to cook my grilled tomato (shown here) you can click Grill a Tomato or visit my good friend Mia-Mia's page, Baked Tomatoes with Basil and Balsamic Vinegar. Hers is a healthier version that is cooked in the oven.

Yep, definitely my red velvet cake. I'll just doll it up a bit, and make a special meal to go with it. Great lens. I'm feeling more in a Valentine mood already.

Oh my dear, I'm on a strict diet for months, so food ideas are right now a no-no in my life. And believe me, it's frustrating, especially after a visit to a page that's related to food only. You see, now, I'm hungry... lol.

Excellent ideas for valentines. Your second menu for valentines sounds delicious. Yummy chocolate covered strawberries sound great :)

I prefer a quiet dinner at home, sometimes restaurants are crowded.

Sweet 'Sugar Cookies' could become a 'Be My Valentine' cookie cut out in a heart shape and frosted with pink/red frosting! :)
