Old Fashioned Candy Gifts

Updated on December 24, 2017

A baby boomer with a sweet tooth and fond memories of her childhood, including the candies she loved.

If you were a child or young adult between the 1940s and the 1980s, you'll remember those special old-fashioned treats - candy bars, chocolates, and 20th-century sweets.

A good number of them have become somewhat 'extinct' but you can still find some of the favourites of the time being produced till this day.

Old-fashioned candy are not only great to have at home for those occasional sweet cravings you may have, they also make great gifts for the old-timers who still reminisce about days when the word 'sugar' didn't send off alarming bells.

Unlike today's candies that are so packed with artificial sweeteners and unhealthy additives, sweets of old were produced with healthy ingredients and packed with real sugar and natural molasses.

Even when compared with today's sweets and chocolates, traditional sweets, as many lovers attest to, were the best-produced sweets ever. And though they contained much more sugar or molasses than is good for today's generation, they weren't really bad for the health and never encouraged obesity as do confectionery of today.

Vintage Old-Fashioned Candy - The Favourites

You won't find these old treats in the shops today but you can find them at major candy stores online and at places like Amazon and eBay. You will also find them at candy stores that exclusively sell vintage and retro sweets. They come either packaged in boxes or in bouquets of gift baskets full of old favourites.

From vintage 1940s to retro 1960s sweets, packs and baskets contain anything from a dozen bars to over 50 pieces of a mix of small, medium and large sized varieties of bars, boiled sweets, traditional chocolates, etc...

Popular favourites of the time include:

  • BB Bats
  • Bit O Honey
  • Bubble Gum Cigars
  • Canada Mints
  • C Howard Violet Gum
  • Candy Buttons
  • Candy Cigarettes
  • Charms Squares
  • Chuckles
  • Coconut Bars
  • French Chew
  • Jujubes
  • Kits Taffy
  • Long Boys
  • Pearson's Salted Nut Roll

And then, there are other hot favourites which include:

  • Red Hots
  • Sen Sen
  • Smith Brothers Liquorice
  • Snaps
  • Sugar Daddy Pops
  • Teaberry Gum
  • Black Taffy
  • Bulls Eye's Caramel Creams
  • Chick O Stick Nuggets
  • Necco Assorted Wafters
  • Root Beer Barrels
  • Walnettos
  • Candy cigarettes.

Great Gift Idea for the Hard-to-Buy-For

An interestingly different gift idea for the age group it represents, especially baby boomers, and those who may wish to have a taste of the old-fashioned sweets, candy bars and chocolates of old, vintage confectionery are the perfect presents for the hard-to-buy-for.

From gums and hard candies to candy bars, taffy, sugar pops, and smarties, they bring back pleasant memories of a childhood period when it was absolutely okay to scoff down sweet treats without worrying about issues associated with sugar consumption.

So if you or anyone you know was born between the 1940s and the 1980s, vintage candy gifts will bring back sweet memories as you tour memories of your youth with every delicious bite.
