Bizarre And Weird April Holidays

Updated on February 9, 2014

Weird Holidays Are A Great Reason To Throw A Party - Let's Explore A Few That Take Place In April

Weird celebrations. Bizarre holidays. Strange observances. That's what this lens is all about, and it's all going to be focused on one month - April.

While you will find some of the more widely known holidays in this article, the majority of it will focused on just how many strange, wacky and odd observances there really are in any given month.

Before you go any further, you should realize that this won't be the end all and be all of weird holiday lists as I am listing only those that I find to be most interesting. Some may be authentic, while a few will certainly be... questionable to say the least, but all are interesting. You may even find a few that are more widely celebrated in other countries, but even they can be enjoyed by anyone. So, if you're the kind of person who likes to celebrate holidays, you'll be glad to know that you can celebrate more than a few times a month. Enjoy the lens.

International Pooper Scooper Week - Always the first week in April.

Professional animal waste removal specialists know the importance removing your pet's poop after its evacuation, which is, of course, why this week was created. Feel free to urge (or teach) others the most efficient ways to clean up the offending material so that everyone will have a better walking experience.

Husband Appreciation Day - Every third Saturday in April.

Most husbands have it hard. Sit down and think about all the things a husband has to do and the responsibility it takes to be a good one. Now, I know that everyone isn't lucky enough to have a great husband, but those that do should take advantage of this day to do something that makes him feel appreciated, whether it be from getting him a nice gift or making him a nice dinner.

April Fool's Day / National Fun at Work Day

April 1st

Everyone knows that the first day of April is reserved for funny items, gag gifts and practical jokes. It's no surprise that some people have a lot of fun on this day while a few don't (due to being the victim). Keep in mind that this is a day of laughs and feeling good. Don't make it about humiliation. If you have a job where you can enjoy this holiday in good fun, don't risk losing it by going too far with a joke.

One other important tip that I can add is to never do any kind of joke or prank that can cause serious damage to someone's property. That is a sure way to ruin an often fun day for everyone.

World Rat Day

April 4th

Before you get worked up too much about this holiday, you need to know that it is a day celebrating the pet rat not the wild rat. This weird April holiday was started back in 2002 by members of the ratlist, a large mailing list on the internet dedicated to the care and feeding of the pet rat.

It is a day to honor and promote the rat as the great companion pets they really are. I would, however, talk to anyone else living with you before going out and buying one.

National Beer Day

April 7th

This is mainly a U.S. holiday as it commemorates President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the Cullen-Harrison Act into law making it legal to sell beer again starting on April 7, 1933.

April 6th also gets recognition as New Beer's Eve as thousands of Americans lined up outside bars, waiting for midnight to strike so they could get their first taste of legal beer in thirteen years.

When celebrating this festive April holiday it's very important to have someone who stays sober to watch after everyone else. Don't ruin this day by driving while intoxicated.

Golfer's Day / Golf Day - April 10th

Everyone may not have heard of this day, but it's a good bet that most avid golfers have, although some may try to convince you that it takes place many times a year. Golf day is a chance for golfers to look back and be thankful that the game was invented and celebrate it in the best way they know how - by playing golf.

National Licorice Day

April 12th

Licorice may not be as popular in the U.S. as in the rest of the world, but it is still liked by millions of people here in the States. Although the most commonly ingested form is candy, it is actually used as flavoring in many soft drinks, medicines and teas as well.

So, if you're someone who enjoys this curious flavored root, why not celebrate this day by trying to get someone else to give it a try. You could throw a tasting party or just give pieces of candy out as gifts. I highly recommend the soft candy for people who have never tried it before as you can usually get it in several different flavors.

Look Alike Day

April 20th

Do you have a celebrity, family member or friend that you admire? They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and this day is the perfect day to take advantage of that; it's like having Halloween take place in April. Whether you want to be a Katy Perry look alike or just have the same hair style of Lady GaGa, today is the day to give it a try. One tip that I can offer from personal experience is to think twice before trying to impersonate your boss unless you really get along with them well.

National Jelly Bean Day - April 22nd

One of my best memories while growing up was going into my father's office and snacking on jelly beans that he kept in a candy dish on his desk. I love getting the sampler boxes and giving them as gifts to my closest friends on this day. You will too.

National Pretzel Day

April 26th

The pretzel dates back over a thousand years where monks in France baked strips of dough into the shape of folded arms and added a little salt to it. It has grown into a huge snack industry where you can get your pretzel in almost any way you want whether it be thin, thick, soft, crunchy, salted, unsalted or flavored. Celebrate this day with pride.

International Dance Day - April 29th

Although this day was created to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (creator of modern ballet), I believe this unique holiday can be celebrated with any form of dance. I like to break out in spontaneous public dancing throughout the day, and if your lucky, you'll have other people join in.

National Honesty Day

April 30th

This can be a tricky holiday to celebrate. On one hand, if we want people to believe us when it counts, it's important to always tell the truth. The other side of that coin, however, is that a lot of people don't want to hear the truth. In fact, telling the truth may get you a few slaps or punches in the face.

Most people try and celebrate this day by being completely honest. I believe the best way to practice it is to be honest on the important stuff and a little less honest on stuff that just doesn't matter that much (especially when it involves someone's feelings). I leave it up to you.
