Where's Wally and Where's Wenda Costume for Adults

Updated on April 8, 2015

Can you spot Wally?

Where's Wally was created by British illustrator Martin Handford in 1987 when his art director asked him to draw a single distinctive character to carry through his crowd illustrations. He came up with Wally - with his red and white stripped outfit, glasses and walking stick he just about stood out from the crowd! Martin Handfords Where's Wally books consist of double page crowd scenes where lots of people are drawn in a particular setting or scene and the reader is challenged to find Wally amoungst the crowd.

Where's Wally (or Waldo if you're in the States or Canada) has been around for many years, and is a firm favourite activity for many children and adults alike. His chaotic 'Where's Wally' life scene picture books can give hours of fun and entertainment to all the family. After the initial books Handford added the additional characters of Wenda (Wanda) his female travelling companion, Odlaw his arch nemesis, Wizard Whitebeard, Woof Wally's dog (although you often only see his tail) and eventually the Wally Watchers, Wally's fan club who dress like him (there are 99 of them now).

As Wally has become a childhood character in most peoples lives, he has also become a firm favourite fancy dress character for adults. The costume is nice an easy to put together and will always be recognisable, so you wont have to explain to people who you are. What's most fun is when large groups of people all dress as Wally/Wenda or just as the Wally Watchers Fan Club, you're certain never to lose your friends on a night out!

If you want to get a costume the easy way you can buy them on Amazon. Click here for UK costumes and here for US costumes. Or if you want to DIY your own version for any member of the family check out what you will need below!

Create your own Where's Wally Costume for Men

1. The Stripped Shirt

The obvious thing your going to need to dress up as Wally or Waldo is the red & white stripped shirt. You may be able to find one on the highstreet, but they really aren't that common. The other option is to DIY it with a white shirt and a red marker pen!

2. The Round Black Glasses

The other thing you will need is a pair of those iconic glasses! You will never see Wally without a pair! You can pick these up in most fancy dress shops or on Ebay and they are usually pretty cheap. Sometimes they will be advertised as Harry Potter Glasses too!

3. Where's Wally's Stripped Hat

If you have a crafty granny or your partial to a bit of knitting yourself you could always make your own bobble hat. But if your like me and just like the easy way out then why not just buy one. You never know it may come in useful in the winter months. You'll find them in plenty of fancy dress shops or online.

4. A Walking Stick

Lastly, if you want to take the costume one step further and really go for an authentic look then you need 2 last items. The walking stick is the first one, you may be able to borrow one from an elderly relative or find one in a second hand or charity shop, or find one on the Amazon link above.

5. A Rucksack

The second item would be a rucksack backed full of random bits. I shall assume most people have a hiking bag or some sort of large backpack, so all you have to do it pack it full and your ready to go. Try using large towels to bulk it out a bit or bubble wrap as it'll be nice and light. Although I wouldn't advise it for a night out as it's just a bit inconvenient to carry around.

Create a Where's Wanda Costume for Women

So for us ladies, if we don't fancy going as Wally himself we can always try going as Wenda (or Wanda in the States). Her outfit is very similar to Wallys, but instead of blue trousers she has a blue skirt and stripped tights. The outfit above is the complete outfit so you will be kitted out to channel your Wenda perfectly. You will get the hat, glasses, dress and tights, so won't need anything else, you'll find it on the Amazon link at the start, or on eBay.

A Sexy Wenda Costume!

This little outfit is more of a sexy take on the traditional Wenda costume, and why not! So if your planning a night out on the town or a big party this outfit would be great. It'll keep you cool in the bars and night clubs and keep you looking just a little bit geek chic and sexy too. Again this is a complete outfit (not including the shoes) so you will have all you need.

If you're just going to get the shorts and top or a dress then you can purchase the same hat and glasses as above for the Wally costume.

Find both these costumes online or follow our tips below to create your own.

1. A Red Stripped Top or Vest Top

Just like Wally, Wenda needs a red and white stripped top. If your going for a night on the town then why not try looking for a stripped vest top to help keep you cool. Either buy one or DIY one like I mentioned in the Wally costume above, red felt tip pens or red fabric paint will do the job.

2. Blue Shorts or Skirt

To go with that stripy top you'll need some blue shorts or a blue skirt, You can either go for a plain version or check out the tutu skirt version below, which is super cute!

Fancy Something a little different?

Red and White Striped Tutu

If you don't want to blend in with the crowd (pun intended!) why not make your Wally/Wenda costume stand out by donning this cute and girly Red and White striped Tutu with blue trim instead! At just £10.99 it's pretty cheap too. Your certain to be the best dressed Wenda at the party in this little number.

3. Get Yourself Some Stripped Tights or Knee High Socks

If you've got yourself the main outfit items of a top and skirt (and the same glasses and hat as Wally) then your just needing one last thing - a nice pair of Red and White Striped tights or socks.

The tights are great if the weather is a little colder or to help you cover up if you don't like your legs on show. Check out Primark or online for a cheap pair, you can usually pick them up for just a few pound.

If you want to stick with a slightly sexier outfit then maybe knee high stockings will be more your thing. You can find these super cheap online, not just on Amazon but also eBay or Tights UK. They are really easy to come by and just add a cuter edge to the look. Again they will help keep you cooler if you plan on dancing the night away in a hot club.

What to know a bit more about Wally?

If you would like to know a little more about Where's Wally; the history, the designer, the books and more Where's Wally merchandise - then check out some of the links below. You will also find some seriously fun free online Where's Wally games, and some you can download for your computer, phone or iPad.

Would you ever dress up as Where's Wally or Wanda?

So what do you think about Where's Wally? Would you ever dress up as him or one of his side kicks or is dressing up just not your thing? If you have dressed up as him in the past did you enjoy yourself, please feel free to share your tips and experiences here. I'd love to hear your opinion.

I've not seen Wanda. I've been out of the Where's Wally loop for awhile since my children are now grown.

My kids loved the Where's Waldo books when they were little. They would probably get a real kick out of one of these costumes.
