Simple, Easy To Make Costumes

The characters from Kansas are normal, everyday people so their costumes will be easy to make yourself. It's also fun to make your own Halloween can be as creative as you want and add special touches that will make them unique.

Dorothy Gale wears a dress, socks, dark leather shoes and her hair is styled in pig tails tied with ribbons. Her dress in the movie is a blue and white gingham pinafore with a white short sleeve blouse. If you have a blue and white check apron you can wear it over a white blouse and a skirt. Tie your hair with some blue or blue and white ribbons and you should be good to go.

Auntie Em is dressed in a house dress with practical leather shoes and an apron. Uncle Henry and the farm hands are in jeans and work shirts...plaid or flannel. They wear leather shoes suitable for farm work or boots. That's good for Uncle Henry's look and to complete Zeke, Hickory or Hunk you can add a colorful bandana to your neck.

Miss Gulch is dressed in an old fashioned long dress with a high collar and long sleeves. The look you are going for is an old spinster. She is a crabby and unattractive woman who wears her hair pulled up in a very tight bun. She looks very much like a dried up old gulch of a woman and you can easily see the witch when you look at her pruny angry face.

Professor Marvel looks like an old traveling sales man. He has on a baggy suit, a tie and a dress shirt. He wears a top hat and wears practical leather everyone else in the Kansas set. You have to think of the times when you are designing and putting together one of these character costumes. It was hard times, money was tight, farm life in a farm state mean't none of these characters had any wealth to speak of.

@anonymous: The Miss Gulch costume is from the late 1800's or early 1900s and I couldn't find anything online similar, and I did look! She is an outfit that would take a bit of searching and probably wouldn't be cheap. I am picturing her in the outfit she is wearing on the bike, not a prairie skirt and blouse style. Is that the one you are talking about? Good Luck and have fun, whatever costume you dress up in!

I want to wear a Miss Gulch costme but can not find one anywhere. I do not have the skill or time to make a costume. So, I guess I will have to go the easy way and be the the wicked witch. I am so disappointed.

Very nice. Both my children have used our Scarecrow costume for Halloween and received quite a few compliments. They also played in a musical version of The Wizard of Oz last year. My son played The Wizard and it was just so much fun! Great page.
