World Habitat Day

Updated on January 27, 2015

World Habitat Day

Did you know that October 1, 2012 is World Habitat Day. Celebrated annually on first Monday in October, this global observance shares with humanity the world conditions of the human settlements and people's rights to sufficient shelter. Beginning in 1985, due to United Nations Resolution 40/202, World Habitat Day is working to better plan cities for growth and urban development.

UN-HABITAT runs more than 130 technical cooperation programmes and projects in over 60 countries. To see which countries are participating, go to World Habitat Day Partners for a list.

We who are involved in Squidoo are so fortunate just to have the basics of food, shelter, clothing available everyday when millions around the world are lacking so much. World Habitat Day hopefully will educate many of the additional need and ways people can help others acquire those basic needs that many of us take for granted.

Lives were lost, communities destroyed. An already-challenged country instantly faced even greater odds. Nearly three years later, some progress has been made, but the fact that -- unacceptably -- hundreds of thousands of people still live in tents and makeshift shelters should shake the world community.

Quote from Jane Goodall

There would be very little point in my exhausting myself and other conservationist themselves in trying to protect animals and habitats if we weren't at the same time raising young people to be better stewards.
